Which is it; Oil or Protecting Israel?
Senator Ernest Hollings and Louis Farrakhan claim the war is about protecting Israel. Most of us here at DU believe oil is the reason.

Who is correct?

13. There is one message
The war is wrong.

I don't know why we need to say there is only one motive for this thing; I am not aware of many global actions taken that are simplistic enough to only have a single basis.

By the way, to say it is just for "oil" is too short-sighted. "Corporate America" or the "Corporate war and oil industries" are more appropriate. Halliburton does not deal exclusively with energy, but they are by far the most successful war profiteer to come out of this mess.

30. PNAC's motive is a new American Empire
PNAC's motive is more than Israel. They want the U.S. to control all the world's resources. They want American hegemony, i.e. we rule the world. They want U.S. control of the ME, i.e. OIL. They want to conquer N. Korea and surround China. They want to build American military bases on the moon. They want to control space and place weapons there. They want biological weapons that can target a specific ethnicity.

Plus, they grant themselves absolute license to lie to you about whatever they like, under their philosophy (see Leo Strauss).

7. Can I have some oil with my religion?
Haven't they just recently (accidentally) disclosed that they are strictly adherring to the second coming prophecy? Add a little more power, a big country over a helpless third world country with lots of oil, plus an easily manipulated country who's half the population cheers with overwhelming enthusiasm with their ever-waving flags while they've being ripped off and lied to (and snickered at), and you've got a madman who thinks he's not only above the law, he thinks he's God.

23. Cite for end times accidental disclosure?
I ask not because I don't believe you, but because I'm particularly interested in the topic. In fact, I address this not only to this guy, but anyone who knows.

Are you referring to the NY Times letter to the editor by the author of "The Bible Code" and end-times prognosticator Jack Van Impe's revelation that Condi Rice had contacted him for an outline of the coming events in the Middle East?

If so, how do these show that their predictions are coming true?

11. There are several reasons
Oil and Israel are two of them. PNAC-reasoned global dominance is another. Vengeance ("he tried to kill my daddy") is another. Just flat out misguided incompetence is another, because this administration hasn't gotten a damn thing right yet.

But be sure of one thing - it wasn't because Iraq was a threat to us. One of the reasons this war was said to be successful was because Iraq was weak and we could take them down quickly. And it sure the hell wasn't to liberate the Iraqi people, because they're by far not the only oppressed (or even the worst oppressed) people in the world.

18. Oil. Which is one of the reasons we support Israel as well. True, they
have no oil of their own, but they are a regional military superpower. Even post-Cold War it still makes sense to US oil interests to have Israel as a strategic Western foothold in the Middle East.

WHY is Israel a military superpower in the region? What do they manufacture, what do they grow, what do they export? NoN??? So, WHY/how is it possible that they are a military superpower in the region????

22. US support of course, which was an outgrowth of Cold War policy
Also, they have a very skilled and well-trained military independent of US aid. But the fact is they are a military superpower now in a strategic and oil rich area, and a US ally.

27. Here, both
The pc answer on DU is both

The real answer that many will dismiss is Israel.

The sanctions against Iraqi oil was a sham, the flow and sale never stopped rather simply was off-loaded in St. Eustatius and then continued on to US refineries.

The view this invasion was about oil is simplistic at best.
Why invade a country for it's oil when you already own it?

Very little in life--if anything--is caused by only one thing. Very little is black and white. Only very little people think like this, which is the way Junior does; but then, he's a very, very little person.

33. Well...yes and no...
Junior's without a doubt the dimmest of the bunch, and that must irk them all to no end, but they're not all dummies.

Cheney and Rumsfeld are very smart. Karl Rove is nowhere near the genius people think he is, but he's not a moron. Powell and Rice are thoroughly mediocre, and they hide behind their rank and degrees to disprove the obvious. Card is no world beater, but he's no idiot. Perle is pretty sharp, as is Feith, but Wolfowitz is a cipher: is he really that out-of-touch, or is it an act? Snow doesn't impress me.

All in all, you're right, but I think you're missing the boat on Cheney. He's made some colossal fuck-ups in his day: buying Dresser Industries was a corker, especially since all the warnings were there, and there's this little war thing...
