Biden won’t run for president in 2004

By BETH MILLER
Staff reporter
8/11/2003

Sen. Joe Biden, Delaware’s senior senator and the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced today that he would not run for president in 2004.

<snip>

“As I said I was going to do, I have taken a long and hard look at what it would take to win my party’s nomination. My goal is to influence the direction of our country because I am deeply concerned that we are heading in the wrong direction at home and abroad, Biden said.

Obviously, the best way to do that would be as the Democratic nominee for president. But, at this late date, everything would have to fall perfectly into place, and I would have to put on hold what influence I have in the United States Senate in pursuit of what is now too much of a long shot. ....

------------------------------------------------

This is good news I suppose. He would have been a decent candidate. About as good/strong as Kerry, he's a better orator/speech-giver, and more charismatic and less out-of-touch than Kerry, but of course he doesn't have Vietnam or the JFK similarites.

If this benefits any candidate it's Kerry, and if it hurts any candidate it's Dean atleast somewhat.

1. bad news
this helps Lieberman. If he had ran Lieberman would've been toast even faster than he will be now.

3. It's too late to start a campaign for president
Biden realized that and dropped out. Maybe if he had thrown his hat in the ring back in late winter he would have time.

But he didn't and realized that he simply couldn't make a run.

7. But that was in 1991 and he probably had been planning
months ahead of time.

10. Clinton wanted the job
this guy just wants to generate a few headlines and be thought as a "serious" guy.

4. Don't worry about Lieberman
Nobody with any clout who follows these things thinks Joe has even close to a chance

Because Iowa will be probably very close to a 3 way tie for first(Gep, Dean, and Kerry) and New Hampshire probably being close to a 2-way tie for first(between Dean and Kerry),

Lieberman is putting all of his cards on dominating the Feb 2 primarys(SC, OK, AZ, and NM)

Unfortunatly for him Edwards is taking alot of his numbers in those states, and will likely be the dominator of them, which will make Edwards, Gephardt, Kerry, and Dean the only serious candidates going into the subsequent primaries.

8. Biden Would Have Had Younger Voters Staying Away From the Polls in Droves
after sleazing the Rave Act through Congress without a vote or debate.

6. Hey, I'm not running either, start writting the news stories
what a joke this has become. You got Al Sharpton, Kucinich, Carol Moseley Braun who have 0 (zero) chance of getting elected and now him.
