Scientists Say Chicago Sinking Every Year
CHICAGO - Shifting land caused by the melting of Canadian glaciers causes Chicago to sink at the rate of about a millimeter a year, a Northwestern University study has found.

The shift also causes water in the Great Lakes to slosh from the upper Great Lakes into their lower reaches.

The study was done by researchers at Northwestern University with collaborators around the U.S. and Canada. It was presented Wednesday at a joint meeting in Montreal of the American and Canadian Geophysical Unions.

Scientists used 10 years of readings from global positioning satellites at more than 200 points across North America to determine the shift.

1. I don't need a scientist to tell me that the Cubs are doing badly
Oh wait; that's not what it's about. Never mind.

4. It's those damn Chicago hot dogs!
Load them up with onions, peppers, pickles, mustard and God knows what else (except ketchup, of course), and look what happens! Come on, put less stuff on them!

It's either that, or those insane pizzas the size of children's wading pools...

Or maybe it's a micro-black hole over Wrigley field, sucking away the spirits and hopes of all the Cubs fans each year...

Or...(can't help myself...I live in Wisconsin...)

13. fascinating! The city has already been raised one story above ground.
The "official grade" of the city is actually about one story above natural ground level near the lake (the area of the Loop)..and this has all been filled in alredy. The grade change is really obvious in close-in neighborhoods like Pilsen, as some of the houses and lots never had been raised, given these neighborhoods an occasional "sunken gardens" feeling.

14. Examples "sunken houses" in Bridgeport neighborhood
One of those close in neighborhoods, where the streets are at the "official grade", but houses and lots arent.
