Thoughts on waiting for a train in NYC
left NYC today after a week long business trip. Sitting in the amtrak waiting area for 45 minutes listening to the intercom tell me to alert authorities to any suspicious packages. Over and over again. Totally creeped me out. National guardsmen, cops with dogs, just very scary. I wouldn't want to be there during the RNC Convention- sitting underneath Madison Square Garden. I am sure the security will be very tight- thereby making you think about the need for the security every second. Ugh. What a world we are living in right now.

1. If security there is anything like that of the DNC
The train station underneath the convention center will be closed.

3. Impossible.
That is the main station for thousand and thousands of commuters. Impossible to close it. Highly unlikely.

7. i agree!
the anti-bush, anti-war crowd would be NOTHING compared to what would happen if they tried to shut down Penn Station.

"impossible" is right!

p.s. hey Steph! got my performance dates for The Question W Revue! we open in Mid july with an eye to run through the convention!! will be posting more info very soon and will have a new page on www.questionW.com by the weekend.

8. Loads of people use the T in Boston
And several stops are being closed. The entire city is going to be a mess during the convention.

11. if the T is a subway line
that's one thing.

Penn station is MUCH MUCH more than a subway stop. it would be crippling. economically, Bloomberg just couldn't do it.

12. Oh, didn't realize it was Penn we were talking about
Ooops. That poses all sorts of fun security concerns then.

Glad I'm going to the DNC rather than the RNC.

17. Boston's Penn is North Station...which will be CLOSED
because it is under the convention center. As will Interstate 93, because it runs near the convention center. Thanks to the REPUBLICAN governor, Mitt Romney. He just wants to make sure all the dems are safe, y'understand? That's all.

Read that again...in Boston, they are closing the interstate and a main subway station. It is going to cripple the city, not to mention that closing the train station at the convention center means everyone has to DRIVE or take alt transport...but the HIWAY will be closed, too. This is going to be a world class cluster fuck.

4. i guess the people who commute every day
will have to find alternate means of getting to work- might be a good time to take a vacation. WillPitt said months ago "they will rue the day" they chose NYC for their site- I just hope lots of other people don't. And I hope the protests are powerful tools FOR us and not a weapon to be used against us.

2. We have lived like that for the last two and half years
This is nothing. You should have been here for the six months post 9/11, if you want to experience real anxiety. Most of us still aren't over it. Welcome to NY!

5. i was in the city in January following 9/11
it was creepy then too- except that then it felt like a total abberation, surreal even. Now it feels like we will always live in fear. I hate it.

6. There is no point living a life of fear.
If you do live a life of fear, you'll just regret it 20, 30, 50 years down the road.

9. you're right, of course.
I do try to remember that, but these days it just washes over me sometimes- I'm mostly scared for my sons. I'm also angry and determined, that helps a bit to fight the fear. The thing of it is, I am normally a bit of a Pollyanna, glass half full kinda girl- that's getting harder.
