A Backdoor Way to Retake The Senate???
I was just leafing through Daschle's book "A Time Like No Other" and was reading the section about Jeffords's defection when I came across the following:

Jim Jeffords wasn't even the one that they were chasing.

Their three top priorities as far as "missionary work" had been
1.John McCain
2.Lincoln Chafee
3.Jim Jeffords (who was "a distant third")

There were actually discussions between Democratic staffers and the staffs of McCain and Chaffee, so they're not completely closed off from the idea.

My idea is that if we come out on election night +1 seat, we probably pick up Chafee. I don't think McCain will ever go, he seems too loyal to the 'pubbies.

Thoughts?

1. Olympia Snowe would be another one that could move accross
the aisle and help tip the balance of power.....I'm hoping she'll come to her senses. She is more of a Kerry Democrat than a Bush Republican.

3. I think collins's
"moderation" is overrated, when push comes to shove she supports the regime. Chafee seems like the best possibility.

4. Collins is a right winger
Chafee and Snowe are possibilities.

McCain is still quite conservative.
