Halliburton's shareholder meeting on Wednesday attracted more than 300 protesters, including a jazz combo, women dressed in pink and a 25-foot inflatable pig.
Protesters identified themselves as human rights activists, environmentalists, pacifists and residents of cities as far away as San Francisco and Seattle.
They congregated on two blocks downtown between Halliburton's McKinney Street headquarters and the Four Seasons Hotel Houston, where the meeting was held, to complain about the company's role as the main U.S. contractor in Iraq and Halliburton's ties to its former top officer, Vice President Dick Cheney.
"A lot of the reason they're here is for political reasons," Dave Lesar, Halliburton's chairman, president and CEO, said after the meeting. "A lot of those individuals oppose the war. I'm a big believer in free speech, and I think the U.S. troops are in Iraq to create an environment where the Iraqi people have a right to speak freely."
