Canadian Election to be called Sunday. Any questions? Ask the Canadians.
PM Paul Martin is almost certain to call a Federal General Election this Sunday for June 28th, so I thought I'd put this thread up for anyone who wants to know more about our country's politics and elections. Hopefully some of the other Canadians will show up and field some of your questions also. We'll try not to turn it into an NDP vs Liberal flamewar. Anyone got any questions?

1. Didn't they just have an election?
What will probably change from the last election? What are the trendlines?

4. The last Federal election was on Nov 27th 2000.
The power to drop the writ, to choose the election date rests with the Prime Minister, currently Paul Martin.
Most recent polls place the Liberals at around 39%, the Conservatives at 25-27% and the left-wing New Democrats at 15-18%. In the last election the Liberals received 41% of the vote, the Canadian Alliance (now the Conservative Party of Canada, after December's 'merger'/takeover of the Progressive Conservatives) received 25.5%, the Progressive Conservatives received 12%, the Bloc Quebecois 10%, the NDP 8.5%.
Polls show voter dissatisfaction with the Liberals, but also a reluctance to embrace the other two main parties as an alternative. If there was a viable alternative (in the minds of the electorate) the Liberals would be looking at the end of their eleven year rule.

9. Not that I'm aware of. It's more of a provincial matter.
It was a major issue in the last Saskatchewan and Alberta elections.

6. Depends. Statistics Canada provide an index of meat provision
Usually at the top, one finds Montreal, with a whopping 459 grams (I believe they provide a small carrier bag), while commonly at the bottom is stingy old Medicine Hat, with a measly 45 grams, a result of government cutbacks in the mid-90's.

3. "Almost certain"?
I've heard all the media speculation. It would be a PR disaster if he didn't call them. But he can still not do it.

5. We all absolutely expect it, but it is technically possible to not call it
Say 90% chance of an election call.
