The "Washingtonienne" Scandal Heats Up: Senator DeWine (R-OH)
I'm sure there are more than a few of us following the developing "Washingtonienne" Scandal. Ahh, the exciting sexual escapades of Beltway Workers, replete with allegations of prostitution, and anal sex, and what-not...

If you're new to "Washingtonienne," get caught up by heading over to Wonkette... www.wonkette.com. Wonkette now reports that bumperstickers reading "SAVE WASHINGTONIENNE" are popping up all around the inside-the-beltway loop.

Here's the latest... and yes, it would appear our dear Washingtonienne was a Mike DeWine staffer.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/2004-05-21-aide-blog_x.htm

Excerpt:

Sen. Mike DeWine said Thursday that he has not decided whether to fire an aide who allegedly posted her exploits in an Internet diary, including accepting $400 from a married man for sex.
"We're in the process of completing a review," the Ohio Republican said. "It's a personnel matter."

However, DeWine said he expects to make a decision on the aide's job soon.

The entry-level assistant used the pseudonym "Washingtonienne" in a blog, or Web diary. The Web site has deleted many of the entries.

Another Internet publication, Swamp City, first reported that the woman works for DeWine. She was not at work Thursday.

2. Well, she's officially fired now.
Via Wonkette:

STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF U.S. SENATOR MIKE DEWINE (R-OH):

On May 18, 2004, our office became aware of allegations that an employee had been using Senate resources and work-time to post unsuitable and offensive material to an Internet Weblog. After investigating these allegations, our office has determined that there was an unacceptable use of Senate computers to post unsuitable and offensive material to an Internet Weblog. Other inappropriate material was found in the employee’s work area as well. The employee has been terminated. Because this is a personnel matter, our office will not name the employee or have any further comment on this issue.

8. from the USA Today article *chuckle*
The woman is not the first congressional aide who got into trouble for Internet-related activities. In 1999, three aides of conservative Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma were disciplined for downloading porn on office computers, Capitol Hill's Roll Call newspaper said.

They downloaded so much material that the office computer crashed.

14. Well, MD could be a doctor as well given the abbreviation
Despite the similarity in my initials I would think I'd remember if it was me, however. :)

Seriously though, in looking at the writing it sounds like something cribbed out of a more raunchy version of "Sex in the City". If it hadn't been in DC most people wouldn't even look at it a second time.

15. "MD" and "MK" - from Washingtonienne:
MD=Dude from the Senate office I interned in Jan. thru Feb. Hired me as an intern. Broke up my relationship w/ MK (see below).

MK=Serious, long-term boyfriend whom I lived with since 2001. Disastrous break up in March, but still seeing each other.

About halfway down the page, from the link above, Washingtonienne provides a handy glossary for scandal-followers. :-)

Guess I'll have to store the site for future reading. Live in the DC area and lived on the Hill for a while but never got absorbed in the politio-culture despite all the interns hanging at the bars near where I lived.

Perhaps this will ignite my curiousity.

Oh, for the love of God. The latest in a long line of low-class, self-absorbed, self-promoting, naïve skanks from some village outside the Beltway comes to Washington. Her daddy must be a friend of DeWine’s, or threw money into his campaigns.

What the hell is with these people? Aren’t they undergoing background investigations before they come on-board? Wasn’t anything learned from the Chandra Levy incident? Last year, when I was working on a contract assignment on the Hill, some rich-brat House intern from Texas (whose father WAS - surprise! <sarcasm> - a buddy of that Congressman)was crushing on another intern, who rebuffed him. In retaliation, he started sending the girl threatening E-mails and stalking her. He was fired (and not a moment too soon).

Based on my experience, most young people who come to this town realize that landing a internship is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege. The ones who work on the Hill go through an orientation. They’re lectured that their personal behavior – both on and off the job – reflects not only on them, but also on their boss and the office. (Not surprisingly, no Member of Congress wants to see something like this in the media.) Guess this girl didn’t get the memo.

Maybe it’s because I’m a Washington-area native with twenty years' USG experience and have seen this sort of um, “situation” before, but this just doesn’t seem like news to me: Affairs happen in this town all the time. What DOES astonish me is that some people never learn, and think they won't get caught.

Sorry, but screwing your way up the ladder is like a dirty joke in D.C. The fact that this happened in a GOP office and that she was whoring around with a Bush appointee does make it VERY sweet, though.

Move over Elizabeth Raye, Fannie Foxe, Donna Rice and Monica Lewinsky. Make room for “Washingtoniana”.

(on edit: typo correction)

21. She's doing you a favor
without realizing it. She's evidently been brought up to take advantage of the patriarchal system. She's young and good looking. The men she works for and around are too busy following their dicks to her to keep up their holier and thou crusade. Who says it's only interns who are skanky?

As for her blog, it's sheer self-preservation. She's getting her side of the story out before these guys even know about it. Plus she does it with wit and a fair amount of writing talent.

If it is DeWine, his career will suffer a blowout if this hits the mainstream media. And yeah, I've seen the Hill from the inside too. It ain't pretty.

29. You're right - it isn't only interns
Edited on Fri May-21-04 04:56 PM by Penndems
or people on the Hill or in the USG getting their jollies. We've got plenty of assholes -- women AND men -- working in this town who are over the age of 25 in law firms, lobbying firms, contractor's offices and associations doing the very same thing. But for Hill interns, it's a little different. They're in patronage positions that are coveted by scores of college students who are only here for a short period of time and are expected to exhibit exemplary behavior. Is the pay lousy? You bet. But the experience gained makes up for it. Yeah, it's expensive as hell to live here, but there are ways to make ends meet other than degrading yourself.

There are quite a few women in D.C. (myself included) who have concussions from banging their heads against a glass ceiling. We have to work damn hard to gain acceptance and respect from our male counterparts. Back in the mid-1990's, I worked for Christine Shelley, a press spokesperson at the State Department. Believe me, that woman was as diligent and professional in her career as any man. Got promoted and received awards almost every year, too. Was she accorded the same esteem and high value her male counterparts were? No, and she's still probably trying to attain it. (BTW, Christine was a hell of a lot better writer than "Washingtonianne" could ever be, LOL. ;) Shit like this doesn't help us very much (especially young, attractive women who are trying to gain a foothold the old-fashioned way: with hard work and integrity).

I've worked with a large number of young people during my career who were just fantastic. Their enthusiasm, vitality, youth and fresh ideas add so much. They're like Geritol in a town of iron-poor blood.

Absolutely true: DeWine is probably suffering major heartburn from this and there's gonna be some blowback.

And, yeah -- the Hill can be a cesspool.

(Update: typo)

30. Mike Dewines Cedarville hometown constituents will not be pleased.
Mike Dewine is from Cedarville, home of Cedarville College, Antiochs "evil twin sister", so to speak (they are only a few miles apart).

Cedarville is a very right wing Southern Baptist school, with a popular Xtian radio station, WCDR.

Not sure if Dewine is a fundy..don't think so. I do know a cousin or relative of his who is (or was) gay and had AIDS, so maybe Dewine is not such a hardass on gay issues, or at least AIDS issues.

Since it comes from an "I Love Jenna" blog, one should rightly remain skeptical... note the explicit, judgmental language below...

http://ilovejennabush.blogspot.com/

This is the 23 year old Syracuse graduate who worked for Republican Senator Dewine as a staff assistant and was making 25000 dollars a year and who thought this was too little. She was sleeping with 6 men. Some of them Capitol Hill politicians. One was assfucking her for 400 dollars a pop. She was fired by Dewine for using congressional material, because she wrote about her sexual exploits on a weblog on the computer in Dewine's office. It is now deleted, but her raunchy stories can still be read.
