Repig Jack Ryan has staffer follow Obama everywhere with a camcorder
" For the past 10 days, U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama hasn't been able to go to the bathroom or talk to his wife on his cell phone without having a camera-toting political gofer from his Republican rival filming a few feet away.

In what has to be a first in Illinois politics, Republican Jack Ryan has assigned one of his campaign workers to record every movement and every word of the state senator while he is in public.

That means Justin Warfel, armed with a handheld Panasonic digital camcorder, follows Obama to the bathroom door and waits outside. It means Warfel follows Obama as he moves from meeting to meeting in the Capitol. And it means Warfel tails Obama when he drives to his campaign office.

snip

Warfel interrupted Obama several times with heckling questions, but wouldn't respond when reporters asked him about who he was and why he was filming Obama's every move."

2. WTF?
Obama needs to make an ad about this idiocy. If he does it right, it could be very effective. Can you say "backfire?"

10. I'm up for doing this!
I couldn't do it full-time, but it'd be funny. I did a similiar thing to some FReepers protesting Hillary.

11. No way!
He should have the guy arrested for stalking. Virtually every state has passed anti-stalking legislation.

15. Exactly
And then show it on TV.

How would the average voter respond to seeing that kind of political stalking?

Something like this:

"Hi, I'm Barack Obama. When I go to the bathroom, this guy goes with me. (show shot of him coming out of stall). Why? Because I'm running for the US Senate, and my opponent, Jack Ryan, thinks that he can beat me by having this guy stalk me all day. I approve this message, because I think Illinois voters can judge this for themselves."

Obama would surely win with a minimum of 70-75% of the vote.

3. Wouldn't that violate Illinois' stalking laws
Though I'm guessing that the footage will turn out to be so boring that they will eventually get so bored that they will give up that tactic. They're trying to psych him out and I doubt it will work.

from repubics that would occur if the roles were reversed. I can't imagine this tactic winning Ryan a lot of votes, but then repubics are the most stupid people on the planet.

On edit: And one more thing, who the fuck is paying for this nonsense anyway? The taxpayers or Ryan's campaign?

17. Obama should turn this into a joke on Ryan
Remeber the Wellstone add where he had to walk and talk very fast because he was the underdog? It was very effective.
Obama could include the guy in the add and show himself offering the guy a softdrink or a chair to sit down when he is getting tired.

21. Hull did the same thing in the Dem primary.
Obama and Hynes both had a shadow during the primary and Hull footed the bill for it. This is not new to Obama.

I agree fully, however, that it would be a whole lotta fun to have somebody tape the guy taping Obama. I also agree that Obama could use this in an ad and win with it--except he probably won't go negative unless he absolutely HAS to. THAT is why I adore him so--he has principals.

23. They harassed Paul Wellstone in this same manner...
http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/2002/10/08/news/politics/4233776.htm?1c

The allegations of physical abuse demonstrate how high emotions are running over the close race between Wellstone and Republican Norm Coleman with less than a month to go.

The parties and campaigns employ "trackers" to videotape opposing candidates at public appearances. Both parties have distributed outtakes showing sight lines being deliberately obstructed by signs or people. But this is the first time any party has alleged physical harassment.
