SUNDAY, MAY 23
It's hard to remember such a speedy fall from grace. Four months ago, he was a guest of First Lady Laura Bush, seated behind her at the president's State of the Union speech. Yesterday, Ahmed Chalabi saw his home and offices raided by Iraqi police backed by American soldiers. No one had lobbied the U.S. government longer and more forcefully for the U.S. military to overthrow Saddam than Chalabi. A member of the Iraqi Governing Council, Chalabi was once very tight with the Pentagon and now, ABCNEWS has learned, is suspected of spying for Iran. After the raids, he lashed out at the U.S. occupation authority in Baghdad, saying it is coddling former members of Saddam's Baath party. He declared, "I am America's best friend in Iraq." We'll talk with Chalabi about his estrangement from his former friends in the Bush administration.
We'll also have an exclusive interview with the man many Democrats blame for their tight loss in the 2000 presidential contest: Ralph Nader. He's back in the thick of presidential politics. Nader met with John Kerry this week and shows no sign of getting off the national stage. The Nader factor is something the Kerry and Bush camps are carefully calculating in their campaign strategies.
We've also invited former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., to discuss the fast-moving events in Iraq and what impact they'll have on the presidential race. They'll be joined by George Will and ABCNEWS congressional correspondent Linda Douglass.
In The List, we'll also take note of a stunning defeat in the world's most populous democracy.
And we'll remember a man who made us laugh, another who knew his way around a set of drums, and a woman with a unique talent for showcasing dance.
See you Sunday.
