'Fahrenheit 9/11' Wins Cannes' Top Prize
'Fahrenheit 9/11' Wins Cannes' Top Prize

CANNES, France - American filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a scathing indictment of White House actions after the Sept. 11 attacks, won the top prize Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival
You have to understand, the last time I was on an awards stage, in Hollywood, all hell broke loose," Moore said.

While "Fahrenheit 9/11" was well-received by Cannes audiences, many critics felt it was inferior to Moore's Academy Award-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine," which earned him a special prize at Cannes in 2002.

Some critics speculated that if "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top prize, it would be more for the film's politics than its cinematic value.
With Moore's customary blend of humor and horror, "Fahrenheit 9/11" accuses the Bush camp of stealing the 2000 election, overlooking terrorism warnings before Sept. 11 and fanning fears of more attacks to secure Americans' support for the Iraq war.

Moore said after the ceremony that he expected right-wing media outlets in the United States to characterize his prize as an award from the French, whose government opposed the U.S.-led war on Iraq. He noted that the nine-person Cannes jury that awarded prizes had only one French member and four Americans, including jury president Quentin Tarantino and actress Kathleen Turner.

5. I really like both you and Wonk. I remember that one of the
other threads pointed out in the article:

That these MW want to slight the film...how many critics? who are the critics?

many critics felt it was inferior...

The fact is most of the audience at Cannes is industry people and critics. These were the people who gave the very long standing ovation. I'd say they liked it.

The quality of Farenheit 911 compared to Bowling for Columbine remains to be seen. Though indications are Farenheit 911 might be more effective as a vehicle for social change.

And if you are a documentarian, isn't that the key question? Do you want to be an artist, or do you want to be an effective artist?

7. 911 commentary
This starts off talking about training wheels and repub hubris, but has some good 911F stuff.

"Some footage shows US troops abusing Iraqis. Other footage shows Michael Moore stopping Members of Congress to ask them to sign their kids up to fight in Iraq (no takers). The reported contents of this film contain nothing with which a libertarian could object, and everything to praise to the skies."

10. Welcome to DU :^) Your boss was SO lucky!
What kind of food do you serve at that kind of party, though? From what I am hearing, I wonder if any of us will have an appetite after watching that film. :(

15. I haven't seen ANY Sunday coverrage of this on CNN.
While C-SPAN dusted off a 2003 interview with Michael Moore and ran it this afternoon (and I have no idea whether it was a late addition to the schedule or previously listed), I have not heard a single sentence or seen a crawling headline devoted to this matter on CNN. Yes, we've had lots of "Bush fall down and go BOOM" bits, plus mentions of "Shrek" and "Soul Plane" and Madonna's new tour, plus the Spanish royal wedding, but nothing on a history-making Cannes award.

Is CNN's attention span that sort?

Are they in Bush's pocket?

Do they think their viewers are not sophisticated enough to take an interest in Cannes?

What's with them?
