Racist Liberals Oppose Iraq War
Edited on Sun May-23-04 12:40 PM by BJ
Here's a real twist.

In a letter-to-the-editor in The Sunday Des Moines Register, a reader states the following (sorry, but this is not posted on the Register's Web site, it's print only):
Sadly, I believe the liberals'(emphasis added) opposition to the war in Iraq is based almost solely on deep-seated racist and ultra-nationalist ideals(emphasis added). I can't think of any other reason why they don't support a war that is helping Iraqi women and children by improving health care, schools and drinking water.

The obvious flaws in the writer's logic that I immediately notice are that wars, by their very nature, usually never improve a country or its peoples situation in the short term, sometimes retarding improvements in economic, social and health matters for years if not decades. Secondly, Iraq prior to the invasion as a secular, albeit authoritarian, government had some of the highest percentages of girls and young women receiving in education in the Islamic world. The rest I'll not comment upon until I have time for greater reflection.

1. Nor was that supposed to be the purpose of the war,
nor is war the best way to improve drinking water... Sheesh.

2. This is a meme that Shrub tried to float a week or two ago.
I wouldn't be surprised if the letter writer is a machine.
The argument is bogus, begs the question by asserting as a
premise that we are doing good in Iraq.

10. Perhaps not a machine per se
Edited on Sun May-23-04 01:06 PM by BJ
Clearly the writer, whose name and address I intentionally omitted, is locked in on the neocon "right-think" machine.

Personally I am offended by the notion of "liberals-as-racists" and "ultra-nationalists."

3. that's a more explicit version of what Bush's speechwriters have been doin
.... with all the talk about "some people don't think those with brown skin can govern themselves"....

the upshot of such a statement is, of course, that if you disagree with bush's idiotic policies, then you're racist....

he's made a bunch of statements of that sort lately..... the blogoshpere has been pretty good on catching them - particularly TPM....

I've learned watch what people accuse you of, because usually, it's exactly what they would do.

Especially the school that author went to.

I guess he is a socialist since he wants to spread our wealth amongst the Iraqis.

9. The idiot is brainwashed-that's why we need to talk to them on their level
Edited on Sun May-23-04 01:04 PM by HypnoToad
This proves we need to talk to people on their level and how they've been indoctrined.

This war wasn't about bestowing democracy or anything else good. Not until a misguided group of citizens conjured up the idea that * and everybody else latched on to.

And considering how *'s policies have been destroying health care, education, and drinking water here in America, that reader is a total Freedoming idiot if he thinks we're giving any of those to them. Hell, oops, Halliburton, why don't we all move to Iraq if they're going to get all these nice things?

12. Cheap conservative irony
They love it.

"Liberals are racist"
"Liberals are against economic improvement"
"Liberals hate freedom"
"Liberals are anti-sex"
"Liberals love speech codes"
"Liberals gave us Vietnam"
"Liberals are anti-environment"

And so on.

The Right discovered the technique of humorous inversion around 1990, and they liked it so much, they continue to use it. And use it. And use it. And use it. And use it.

13. We didn't want to go to war because we're "ultra-nationalists"?
Did someone bother explaining to this dumbass what an ultra-nationalist is? An antiwar nationalist makes as much sense as a celibate lecher or an intelligent rethuglican.

16. Those who are part of the Right Wing.....
"Hitler" Hannity and GOP Hate Radio, the Right Wing Pundits, a VAST array of "Ignorant" Country "Music Singers" and "The New Republic" don't seem to want to understandt that they are not the only people in the world. Like this "man" who wrote the letter, he does not understand that an Islamic Republic will be a disaster for the both the Iraqis and the Free World as Iraq will now become a breeding ground for terrorists.

17. wow humanitarian freepers now - sure she doesn't want to nuke them!
shame the schools, water, and health care was in better shape before the invasion.

She should of written in "Sadly I believe anything other than the reality of what is going on in Iraq because I only have idiological freeper neocon values and will stereortype those that differ from my views with false claims of immorality..because mine is just so much higher...you stinking liberals!"

Keep drinking the cool aid lady...you're responsible for the death and destruction by not holding your neocon idols accountable.

---Snip---

Therefore, the Islamic government in Sudan gives us an example of what a large portion of the Muslim world would do to those of us in the Western world. Given power and opportunity, they would kill those who refuse to convert to Islam.

---/Snip---

rest of text here...

So naturally, we need to invade the Sudan now under the guise of liberating them too, and kill everyone who would not convert to Christianity. You know, the same thing we did to the Native Americans and, people of differing points of spiritual views branded "witches" in Salem MA, etc....etc....etc. These Republicans are such a hoot. Gotta love that liberal media.
