Based on my reading of the bible...
"Christian" Republicans seem to be more old testament then new testament while Christian Democrats are more New then Old. They follow the idea of Christ as a tolerant, giving and loving person. Not this old "YOU BURN IN HELL FOREVER IF YOU DEVIATE FROM GOD'S RIGID STANDARDS!!!" nonsense. Anyone else think this way?

1. Old Testamenters and Paulians rather than Christians
Not that Paul didn't have some good statemnets, but he was pretty much a strict zealot.

Would Jesus love a liberal? You bet!

8. definitely
in fact, sometimes right wing "Christians" are like a Christianity without Christ. They tend to sort of mimimize him, barely tolerate him, and most of the time just plain ignore him altogether. Except at Christmas they wave him around for a day or two, but after that, he's back in the closet 'til next year. It's almost like they are embarrassed by all that "peace and love stuff" he taught, and would rather forget it.

...the right wingers would make sure he was nailed up even faster than last time. "Get a job, ya stinkin' hippie freak! Whadya mean, 'feed the poor and heal the sick'? You some kinda commie? If you don't like Murkan capitalism, you can go live in Cuba er somewhere with all your commie friends...".

I've heard the current brand of right wing funnymentalists referred to as "Leviticans" because of their VERY literal interpretations of scripture and also their emphasis on legalism. Sounds like a good description to me.

9. Yup... seems like a lot of 'Christians'
seem to forget to think about what Christ said, as opposed to what it says in Leviticus, and the things Paul said. :eyes:

It makes me sad to see anyone preaching hate and intolerance in the name of Christianity :(

17. The simple comparison.
The god of the old testament was a god of war and vengence: A Fascist.

Jesus was a Socialist.

20. The point is that the harshest laws
and attitudes of the Old and New testaments are upheld by the RW Christian. They tend to overlook the ideas of compassion and love found in either testament.

(Really, this thread is not meant to be a slam against Jews. :) )

18. They treat the Bible like Asscroft treats the Constitution.
They follow some of it, take other parts out of context, and ignore some parts altogether.

Hell doesn't exist in the Old Testament, so that comes from the New. Jesus said once something about if you don't have a sword, sell your belongings and buy one, so they quote that liberally, no pun intended.
AFAIK, that's about all they ever quote from the New Testament.

However, without the New Testament, Christians wouldn't be Christians, they'd be Jews.

23. As a liberal Christian, this is exactly how I see it
Take this whole 10 Commandments thing. I believe that Jesus expanded on the 10 Commandments showing how if you are going to follow the spirit of the law and not just the letter, it is impossible for anyone to live up to them. He wasn't adding to the commandments, as conservative say, he was showing that it is impossible for humans to be perfect, and that is why we should not judge each other, because each one of us has our own imperfections. If you are going to call for an adulterer to be stoned, then you are condemning yourself, because if we keep the spirit of the law, anyone who has looked on someone with lust has committed adultery. Right wingers would say this means that we have to even guard ourselves further, but the point I believe Jesus was making was that maintaining the law is a human impossibility. Better to look after your self and do the best you can, and leave other people's faults to themselves and God.
