My God, EVERYONE Is Saying This Speech Sucked
I mean, EVERYONE. I've flipped around. Nobody thought it worked.

I've never seen nearly every channel be unanimous in its criticism of Bush. This is amazing.

BTW, I didn't watch Fox, because it's pretty much assured that they won't knock him.

8. not really
Just focusing on Bush and how he basically failed to do the ONE THING people expected him to do. Namely, outline a plan and say how we're going to transfer power.

He said the what, who, where, when and why - but not the how. And of course, the how is the most important part.

He just said we've already won because we've "dissembled" Iraq just like we "dissembled" the Taliban.

I wonder if anyone will have the guts to tell him he just said the US made a false show of Iraq just like it made a false show of the Taliban.

Hmmm....Freudian?

I'm watching the replay of Matthew's show right now. Hunter just said that Bush went into "much detail" about who we are handing the reins to on June 30th. Funny, I listened to the whole speech-I don't remember "much detail" about ANYTHING, let alone who takes over on July 1. What an ass.

Edited on Mon May-24-04 09:15 PM by calimary
I don't remember exact wording except when he pleaded for bush to "lead." To call up the Nato people and ask for their help (Yeah, Right, like he's ever going to humble himself enough to admit he needs any help from anyone, anywhere) but adding that he doubted that'd happen. He said he can remember talking to some Nato people and asking them if their leaders would take a call from bush because it's the President of the United States and who wouldn't take a call from the President of the United States, and the response was lukewarm - that MAYBE they would, but time's running out on that. At times, Biden actually shook his head in dismay. He was clearly NOT impressed. And he's usually a simpering sycophant. Not this time.

This was on MSNBC (not CNN), by the way.

43. Thank you for that great recap, calimary!
I've always admired Biden, and I think he's one of the smartest, and best-spoken, Senators. He's always struck me as what I think a leader, a statesmen, a politician, should look and sound like.

He truly disturbed me during the lead-up to the war, and I was so disappointed in his speeches at the time. It's good to see he's finally coming around; I've noticed it more and more in the past few weeks. We could use his voice right now... people always seem to want to listen to Biden.

I'm going to proceed cautiously with him, though. He doesn't get a pass from me on that pre-War Bush-lovin' of his.

52. I know how you feel, Jen.
Biden has been a real disappointment through most of this. FAR too quick to capitulate. FAR too quick to be one of the first always to say "well, the republi-CONS have a good idea but..." or "well, my opponent makes a good point..." ALWAYS too eager to sit up, panting and tail-wagging like they're gonna toss him some Snausages or something. NOW, for the first time in donkey's years, it appears he actually has straight negatives for bush.

He was NOT impressed at all. He just sat there and shook his head and begged for bush to show some leadership - which he all but admitted was just not there. He was VERY disappointed. Don't know what he was expecting, but whatever it was, bush came up way short.

Perhaps, however, it's BECAUSE Biden's been such a bend-over for bush that people HAVE listened to him - maybe as a "voice of reason" from the opposite side of the aisle. A guy who talks like he almost likes bush, so the neocons won't automatically rain fire and brimstone down on him. Well, he's breaking from the pack now. Which makes him a MOST intriguing barometer. Biden was one of the big ones for repeatedly giving bush the benefit of the doubt. Just over and over and over. I was disappointed in him, too, just as you were, especially when we needed our guys to stand up and show their backbones and he could really have been a leader, and he repeatedly balked.

So...what THAT tells me is that Biden's turned, which means the "moderates" among the Dems have turned. And the moderates among the republi-CONS are also no longer rushing to defend bush at all costs. Look at Chuck Hagel, for example. Biden seems to have come around. I guess just one too many smacks on the head with the proverbial two-by-four and something FINALLY sinks in. It's WAY late in coming, though. We've got one of those out here, too - Madame Feinstein. She, too, seems to be less reluctant to criticize bush, while trying to appear almost "presidential" about it. But criticize she does. Finally. Even if it's a little, it's an improvement over being a mindless rubber-stamp. They're no longer spineless. Which means they're no longer bobble-heads.

I only hope it stays that way.

54. I for one cannot figure out why
they would ever let him speak. Everytime he does he just makes more of an idiot out of himself. Maybe that's what they want, so they can dump him?

58. The tipping point...
... has been reached. It's all downhill for Bush* now. The media is no longer afraid to criticize him, since the majority of Americans no longer support him.

71. That's a true but sad point.
and a good observation. The meekness of the press corp has been nothing short of astounding. They are passive and want to stay on bush's good side, for whatever reason. Now that the scales are tipping they are like hungry little scavengers out for the bits of flesh and blood bush is leaving behind . . .

65. Didn't see it
But caught some of it on NPR. Darn applause sounded like the SOTU. Who the heck was giving all the accolades?
I can't stand to listen to him speak. He tries so hard to enunciate and then a pause after anything more than 2 syllables like he is waiting for a scooby snack. Attaboy, now go back to Crawford.
:boring:

69. The Applause
The applause at these things is strictly ritualistic.

73. Everyone except Charlie Rose,
who seemed to think there wasn't a problem in the
world with that lie-laced puke fest.

Gawd, I'm really starting to dislike Herr Rose. :grr:

77. I couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing
but I did flip to it during commercials

first - in defense of bush* --- they did replace the psychodelic tie...

secondly -- both my partner and I were yelling "DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS! DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS!"
