Newsweek: Bush Disliked by Young Voters
Edited on Tue May-25-04 11:44 AM by Jack_Dawson
President Bush, that is. Too bad these same dumbasses are going to waste their vote on Nader.

1. I think that will be his kiss of death.
I think he may actually enrage so many young voters that they'll actually get to the polls this year and swing some states, just like they did in Spain. It's possible.

3. Young Voters
I hope so, most of the young punks I saw holding Bush signs
at the Kerry rally last week, were ignorant, and not informed.
I told them if Bush gets in for 4more years, they will all be
drafted and go off and invade another country.

NO they did not get it, they were really like spoiled rich kids
very ignorant, I asked a lot of questions and they didnt answer
most of them

Kerry does appeal to a lot of young people, he had Howard Dean
there, and Sean Astin the actor
He has a lot of new programs and ideas for the younger voters

5. Assuming the poll data reflects reality- which I don't
Edited on Tue May-25-04 12:20 PM by depakote_kid
what you're seeing is a disatisfaction with or a failure of the Kerry campaign to effectively reach out to younger voters. This is exactly what Howard Dean was talking about when he said that some of his supporters might not be transferable. Not automatically, at any least.

Whether they're "dumbasses" or simply young, idealistic and not enthralled with Kerry's votes support of the war or his votes for the Patriot Act and NAFTA is beside the point. If Kerry wants their support, he needs to work for it. He needs to be percieved as something other than "not Bush." He needs to stand for something in their minds- which, unfortunately, the Democratic Party and many people in and around Kerry's campaign have been unwilling or unable to do all of their young adult lives.

13. I agree. But what can he do without pandering?
It's a serious question. I don't know the answer.

11. "Ralph Nader draws 10 percent of the youth vote "
sounds like he will pull in more than 2.7% this year

Yet despite the dismal ratings young voters were willing to give the president, the Under-30s seemed unwilling to embrace Sen. John Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency. Only 44 percent of young voters said they would vote for Kerry for president in a hypothetical election, compared to 42 percent who said they would vote for Bush. As in previous GENEXT polls, Kerry’s lackluster performance against the incumbent could in part be explained by the so-called "Nader factor." Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader draws 10 percent of the youth vote in the latest poll, down a point from a month earlier.

12. How do you figure that?
Do you have any reasoning to back up that statement or any evidence other than one invalid and probably unreliable "predictive" poll?

16. The young voters don't turn out to vote much, though.
Or at least that's what I've read and heard.
