Does anyone here believe that politics DON"t define the person?
What is the point of having a political point of view if it doesn't express your beliefs and don't your beliefs express who you are?

1. I cannot date a conservative
I find them repulsive. Even if I think he is handsome, sexy, etc., if he opens his mouth and spouts a conservative point of view, I am physically repulsed.

As Janneane Garofalo says, "At this point, voting Republican is a character flaw."

2. For MOST people, no
For us, it's probably YES.

Politics is actually a source of fear and loathing for most people. It has become radioactive -- and that's the way the neo-Cons like it. People without politics don't vote.

Expressing what one is is dangerous for most people. Very few people on this ball of rock approve of what you are at all, no matter who you are.

8. I agree whole-heartedly.
For most people, politics crosses their minds lightly and only occassionally.

For the politically involved, sure it defines us to some extent, so do many other things. And whatever we're using to define ourselves, there's someone out there willing to disapprove of it.

3. It only defines you if you are an extremist. This hold very true....
if you are a Right Winger! Extreme Left Wingers are not as militant as the their Right Wing counterparts!

7. "Extreme left wingers are not as militant as their RW counterparts"
Are you fucking insane? Plenty of people are fucking batshit insane on either side -- pretending the left doesn't have people who are militant and batshit insane is pretty bad. (If you need an example, consult the Gospel of James Carville.)

15. Extreme lefties can be as militant as the extreme righties
The difference is, extreme left-wingers are not as violent as their right-wing counterparts. They're not willing to commit terrorist acts to advance their cause, unlike the extremists on the right, but they can be as irrational and fanatical.

5. Yes, I Do.
I do believe that one's politics often define or is a reflection of who they are.

I also agree that it is very possible that this group can also include extremists.

My core beliefs about the world around me, that which is the "essential" parts of who I am, can be seen in my political views. I don't consider myself extreme. Yet, my passion for all things includes my passion for politics.

For myself, I cannot separate my politics from who I am.

6. I think that to an extent, they do.
However, I think how we act outside of politics is kind of important, and we (bunch of crazed leftist activists) forget that a lot.

Your actions define who you are moreso than your opinions do. For example, let's say Ted is pro-life. If Ted stands outside of Planned Parenthood and takes pictures of women walking in, Ted is a douchebag. But if Ted just chills at home, shaking his head at the newspaper every once in awhile, then Ted's just a dude with a different opinion. He's not automatically a douchebag because of his pro-life opinion.

This isn't as black-and-white as you want it to be, I suspect.

13. I take it you are not a female?
If Ted is jst"chillin at home" and complicitly agreeing with the people who want to strip me of my rights Ted IS a douchebag!. By your analogy the Germans who knew their neighbors were being shipped to concentration camps but just stayed home and agreed with itwere just"dudes with a different opinion".It is absolutely frightening how many people don't see a woman's right to choose as imortant.I wonder what the reaction would be if instead of choice for women it was involuntary castration of men?

9. to an extent
I met a great guy who became a very good friend, we lived three months together and that's then I realized he was what he was..a wingnut...

We're still friends but our views are so disparate we could never have had a serious relationship and we both know it. In fact we don't talk as often now because lately we always argue on politics and religion.

10. Mostly yes
If a person wasn't a complete bastard, or hopelessly ignorant, they wouldn't be conservative. Usually they are both.

They're nice people if I ignore their proclivity to vote for any slimy creature, as long as it can croak out, "I'm a Republican!"
Unfortunately, they are becoming more and more socially conservative as the years go by. I can't even have a glass of wine around them. Sheesh.

it's no more a reflection of their beliefs than is their favorite sports team.
