Limbaugh's Substitute is Defending Wal-Mart

A caller said the biggest problem with Wal-Mart is that they undercut the competition to drive them out of business. His response? "What's wrong with that?"

Where I live, "grocery stores" were driven out of business a loooong time ago.

Supermarkets -- supermarkets like Safeway -- drove them out of business a long time ago.

And these "hardware stores" that you are speaking of?

Are they like Lowes and Home Depot. They're about the only places that seel hardware around here. I remember there used to be small stores that sold a limited amount of hardware and sometimes lumber and sometimes other stuff for home repairs, etc. But their selection was limited and the hours they were open were inconvenient.

They went out of business shortly after Home Depot opened.

Why the hell should anyone shop there? It doesn't have what you want and it isn't open at a convenient time?

The same unfortunately applied to grocery stores. Add to that, they overcharged.

Why the hell should anyone want to shop at a small store with a limited selection of items and open at inconvenient times?

Or why in the hell should anyone want to shop at a grocery store that overcharges for the items it sells?

Especially when there is a large store that has a huge selection of items and is open until midnight and has low, low prices.

Like Walmart.

Walmart doesn't drive other business out of business. Anymore that supermarkets drove grocery stores out of business.

The people who find Walmart a more convenient, less expensive place to shop (and who choose not to shop at smaller places with more limited inventories and shorrter hours) are the ones who drive the smaller business out.

I just amazes me. Maybe they think they are not 'small business' and maybe they think they are not being hurt by Bush policies. Just like 98% of the dittoheads think they are in the top 2% of the economy and the tax cuts will help them. :shrug:

It may in fact be true but there is hell to pay before corrections get made. Government is able to stop the problems before they occur. that is why we have regulations. The same premise applies though. If the regulations are not deemed appropriate they get changed. The only thing is government errs on the side of the people while business errs on the side of greed. Whatever the market will bear is a good talking point but in reality the little guy get's the shaft every time.

If you can deliver a product at a lower cost than the competition, that's fine. Of course, price is not the only selling point and often not even the most important consideration when purchasing a product (at least it shouldn't be).

However, that isn't what Walmart does. Upon entering a market, Walmart sets their prices lower than their costs (which are already greatly reduced as they use their monopolistic power to get better deals than smaller stores and chains can). This has the effect of driving all local competition out of the market leaving only Walmart. After exterminating the competition, you usually begin to see Walmart prices creeping up. The end result is entire business communities devastated by Walmart.

Of course, one could say that it's better in the end because the people have lower prices and can afford to buy more. Yet, this is not true either, because there are no jobs left in their communities so they still don't have money to buy what they need and want.

Wal-Mart is probably going to employ more people in an area than the local stores it runs out of business. Each Wal-Mart has a lot of employees and since it's open 24 hours, or at least later than anything else, it has to hire more shifts.

Now, I understand that most Wal-Mart employees aren't exactly making a living wage, but was Mom & Pop's Hardware or Grocery paying any better? Probably not. And, yes, Wal-Mart employees aren't unionized, but neither were the four of five guys working at the local discount shop, and Wal-Mart's employee benefits are somewhat respectable.

My problem with Wal-Mart (or China-Mart, as my dad calls it) is that everything they sell is from China. I don't mind buying foreign-made products, but I do mind sending my money to a repressive, human rights-violating regime. No need to reward that shit.

He may have gotten a few of his OxyContin prescriptions filled at one or more Wal-Mart pharmacies.
