Would someone please post Woodward excerpt re: Bush speaking in tongues?
Apparently Woodward recounts an incident where Bush started babbling in some unknown language during a meeting? I haven't read Woodward's book and in all the coverage of it I never heard this story referenced. It is absolutely shocking.

If anyone has the book would you mind typing up the passage and posting to share with us? It's inexcusable that we have a President in office who has a serious medical condition, or mental disorder, but the public remains uninformed.

4. My impression is that it wasn't a religious experience
so much as evidence of a seizure or some other malady. But I haven't seen the actual text so I'm not sure.

2. If you have a library available,
you could probably check it out and read the whole book if you'd like. I just took my copy back or I could help you with the passage.

Bush* epileptic?

Chatting with a doctor friend this morning.
She says his actions described in Woodward's book, staring uncomprehendingly into space, speaking in no known language (babbling/tongues), the "pretzel" incident, the "bike" incident would be typical behavior for someone suffering petit mal seizures.
It would also explain the twice daily (unknown type) medications he is said to take.

Perhaps that also explains his switch from running to bicycling, too.

13. You can *probably* dismiss these
Never say never, but if these incidents were described in PLAN OF ATTACK they would have been mentioned widely on the net. That book's been widely read.

For example, Google returns no matches for the quote "began speaking as though in a foreign language" as regarding Bush or attributed to Woodward.

(Not that Bush doesn't have a seizure disorder, but I doubt these quotes were really in PLAN OF ATTACK)

14. You may be right
I can't find anything by searching either. I am trying to search Salon for the Conason letter right now.

That's why I was so shocked that I hadn't heard of it before.

If anyone has read the book please give us a report on whether this was in it or not.

5. Speaking in forked tongues, that is

And I'll bet the other rollers think his gibberish sounds garbled...

Personally, I've always thought speaking in tongues has divine applications: it's most useful for those who have nothing to say but just can't shut up.

6. Probably no such excerpt (from Woodward), but...
Edited on Tue May-25-04 01:52 PM by troublemaker
This fresh horror I found while looking for it was news to me, even though it's from 1999. Why weren't we told about this? Mass media, I'm lookin' at you...
George W. Bush was quoted by Bob Woodward in his book, Bush at War, as promising, during a meeting at the governor’s mansion in 1999, “to export death and violence to the four corners of the earth in defense of this great country and rid the world of evil.” Keep in mind; this was before he was even appointed president and way before 9/11. www.ballotpaper.org/archives/000350.html

ON EDIT: Or maybe not...
(from www.hill-kleerup.org/blog/mtarchive/003968.html)
But Woodward never attributes this quote to Bush. Instead, he records it as being said by an unindentified CIA or Special Forces trooper at a 9/11 memorial they’ve built in the Afghan mountains during the first mission into Afghanistan.
Depending on what the TRUTH is this seems to be a prime example of the dangers of the common practice of quoting "quotes" from the internet. There are dozens of blogs and sites with this possibly bogus Bush attribution out there and it seems likely they are all re-quoting someone who was just making trouble.(A crime I was myself guilty of in this reply, come to think of it, since I re-quoted a re-quote of a bum quote. But at least I kept looking.)

8. Here's one place that talks about it

http://www.tbrnews.org/Archives/a887.htm

"At some time in the past, according to both and the President suffered what one of his aides called "a very minor seizure" and as a result of this, the President has a very difficult time following any unscripted conversations. For this reason, his staff carefully and aggressively protect the President from "unexpected" questions that he is not capable of answering."

"The President takes oral medication at least twice a day according to because of an unspecified "indisposition' and this subject is strictly off limits for any casual staff conversation."

"At one point during a staff conference, the President stood up and began to speak in an unknown language. Mr. Rove was able to stop the President and get him to resume his seat. It was reported by that for a period of time (about fifteen minutes) after this incident, the President appeared to be 'somewhat confused and very inarticulate.'"

9. The intro to that piece makes it suspect
The following material is from a reporter with access to the White House and Presidential press briefings. Some of this material has surfaced before but only in small segments. If any of this is true and not the product of an unhappy person, we are all in serious trouble. Ed.

I thought it was in Woodward's book. Maybe your link is the actual source. Does anyone recall reading this in Woodward?
