What is it with the Republican apologists on this forum?
Lately we have been drowning in the defense of Republicans and I don't think it is all freepers. People are praising and defending the repugs. They all have repug friends, repugs were duped, McCain is a great guy. Gag. I may leave the board. I thought we were Progressive. It is this looney bipartisanship that is destroying us. The congressional Dems trusted the Repugs and where did it get'em? If you sleep with pigs you will wake up with pigs.

2. so...what you are saying is
"Either you are with us or you are against us?"

or maybe

"The reason we are better than the republicans is because we see issues in black or white while they see things in shades of grey"

Sorry, but there are times when republicans do the right thing...it does happen and when it does they deserve to be praised just like anyone else, the same with democrats who do the wrong thing.

4. Listen
There are many republicans on DU that are just fine. I for one have been a lifelong Republican and am proud of it. I voted for Bush 1, Reagan, etc. I just have a difference of opinion with W. Please take it easy on the Republicans here at DU.

Besides I voted for Nader in 2000 so you really can't get on me.

7. I can understand some things the GOP does
The GOP in theory is against abortion and wants less government programs. I can understand how people could come to support both of those conclusions. On abortion they should be the ones to be compromising, as they're attempting to force their moral beliefs on the rest of us. However, when it comes to government spending and size, they do have acceptable and reasonable concerns. I can understand people being hesitant about going to a outright form of socialised health care. That's a pretty big leap from our current system. What I can not understand is that they can not see just how broken the system is. We all live here together, and that means we should all try to get along.

Anybody who could defend the policies of Reagan and Bush I, both amoral slimebags is beyond me.

As far as Clinton, the things he should have gotten hell over is his support for NAFTA. The whitewater phoney scandal doesn't even make a blip on the radar compared to anything that has been done by the last several repub administrations.

57. there's a lot wrong with your argument, saracat
First of all, not all Republicans are neo-con fascists.

Some Republicans, whether they are old-school Eisenhower-style Republicans or whatever, believe in lower taxes, protection of property rights, no welfare for the able-bodied, etc. Amazingly, some Democrats believe in the same things! Some Democrats, even ones who call themselves liberal or progressive, believe immigrants should learn to speak English if they want to be "Americans," and that ain't too different from the English-only repukes.

There are Republicans in congress who sometimes, even often, vote with the Dems on certain issues. There are some Republicans -- Collins, Chaffee, and others among them -- who still belong to that old school of the party of Lincoln.

I dunno, maybe you never were a Republican and have the advantage of never having to call your core beliefs into question. But I was born and raised a Republican and I've had to examine and analyze and question the fundamental social beliefs that I was raised with, and I realised I couldn't be a republican /small r sic/ any more. But I also know that not all those who haven't come over into the Light are still steadfast believers in evil. As Al Franken would say, "They don't know, they just don't know." And when someone comes out and paints them all as evil, it's unlikely they ever will.

Are there disruptors and trolls here on DU? Yeah, without a doubt. And you just gotta deal with 'em. Lock their threads or put 'em on ignore.

But don't forget that every once in a while one of those congressional repukes votes with us on some issue, and you damn well better be grateful when they do.

As someone once said, you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Tansy Gold, who is hiding this thread and any more like it.

62. There is a lot wrong with your point too, Tansy_Gold

I may not have been a Republican, but I was raised in a Republican household. These people today are NOT the same. There may be a few remmnants of ,say. Rockefeller Republicans, but not enough to make a difference. There is NO bipartisanship. One only has to look at the examples of Jean Carnahan and Max Cleland if one wants to see how far bipartisanship goes with this crowd. And we are not catching any flies at all with either honey or vinegar. I wish it were different but it is true.Collins and Snow for all their potential, have been enthusuastically stumping for Bush. Stumping I understand.Enthusiasm, thats another story. And Chaffee should pull a Jeffirds. It is dishonest to remain where you don't belong. And Zell miller should leave the Dems but that Is JMHO.

36. I acknowledge it is irrational
to hate (okay, despise) Republicans as a species, but we don't have time to play word games with and for the flunkies who close rank around the kinds of evil supported by this administration, regardless of their "good hearts" and whatnot.

I do believe there are reasonable (maybe underinformed) "little people" republicans who don't agree with this administration's social engineering policies, with breaking down the walls between church and state, destroying the environment, (on and on and on), but the fact of the matter is that they will STILL BLINDLY VOTE republican, and it's not what they believe or not that matters, just what the end result turns out to be.

We have no defense against that but to blindly close ranks ourselves, and by and large we can't delude ourselves into thinking that we're going to bring the kind of people who turn out to be Republicans into the light before it's time to vote this round.

We all live here together, but someone is always pissing into the river upstream -- and those "someones" turn out to think they're pretty entitled to it by virtue of being more "moral" or "Republican". I can't get along with that.

73. I totally understand that point
I've voted Democrat ever since I could vote as far as elected officials go. But at the same time, I can understand certain things that were suppossedly core to the GOP platform. Abortion, I don't agree with, but I can at least comprehend why they oppose it. Fiscal policy I can also understand, I just think that it doesn't work, and I've got history to back me up on that.

What amases me is that the people who tow that line are still voting for him after he has so handily sold out so many of the party ideals. I actually asked three RW blogs why they were voting for Bush, and the two that responded were really quite interesting.

The link to right thinking is being a tad irritating at moment. These queries were both made in January, before the shit really started to hit the fan in regards to Iraq.

What am *I* doing patronising these sites you ask? Well here is what I wrote on my LJ

"In my hopes of understanding WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE LIKE BUSH! I decided to simply start ASKING. And really, he's not too unreasonable. He has a differance of opinion with me over various hot topic issues like Abortion and size of government. I can't really say I object to that. Maybe the reason I hate Bush is because I'm simply a pessimist, and I only see fault in pretty much everything he has done.

Then again, maybe he's only done the wrong things, and I'm seeing reality. But at least I agree with him on one very important point.

He's WORSE than Reagan! HAHAHA!!!"

58. I think they all are Republicans.
Although, I don't think saying that McCain would have been better than Bush, is apologizing for Republicans. It's just a fact to me.

65. I'm especially astounded by the defense of the late Barry Goldwater...
on this site. He was not an old-time "reasonable" Rockefeller republican. Goldwater's 64 campaign was the advance guard of the wingnut revolution which took over the party (and is trying to take over our country)

I will not defend the character or policies of ANY republican. THEY ARE THE ENEMY.

75. Quite frankly,
I don't think it helps anyone to wage a blanket war against ALL Republicans. Some of my friends are REpublicans. I'm serious. Look, no one recognizes more than I than thuggery and cutthroat tactics of the elite Repubs (DeLay, etc) but we ought not slam all of them. Simply put, there are good REpubs, even on this very board.
