Police State in Sea Island, GA
I read about how GA Gov. Perdue declared a preemptive state of emergency in Sea Island, GA. My mother and her BF are currently staying on the island for a working vacation. I spoke to her last night and asked about the situation there. She said there are military Humvees everywhere and AA missile batteries located all over the place. The national guard troops are already deployed there, too. No one is allowed on the island unless registered with a hotel. She said even when leaving the hotel to go to the spa buildings or restaurants, you have to show ID. Apparently there is an airport out on one of the islands that used to be a secret military installation so it has a very long runway that can accommodate the jets the G8 people fly in on. Doesn't sound like there will be any protesters at this one. Sea Island is remote and impossible to get to if the military controls the roads and bridges you have to travel over. It's a total police state in Sea Island. Any DUers from the Sea Island area?

1. You can walk from St. Simons to Sea Island at one point
Yup, if you are in the East Beach section of St. Simons, go down to the end of Ocean Road (or Bruce Road) and, depending on the tide, you can step right across the channel to Sea Island.

*knock knock*

Oops, somebody's at the door!

3. Yeah, * will be There
It's the G8 summit, I think the president and the 7 other world leaders will attend.

I'm in Pensacola - about 20 minutes from Florabama.

8. Yeah, it's a lovely area. I worked on Cumberland until Raygun cut money
for the Youth Conservation Corps.

My first experience with how politics can affect me personally.

13. Hey Trof
It's nice to meet the other democrat in the panhandle vicinity. Moving here from California definitely took some adjusting - oh, how I hate those "choose life" car tags. There's also this guy who stands at the side of the road with a huge cross swathed in simulated-blood spattered sheets. Loser. Foley - that's home of Lamberts cafe, right? The place with the "throwed rolls" and factory outlet stores? I haven't been up there yet. :)

12. LOL
Pardon my mistake. Our criminally convicted and unelected fraud and 7 world leaders will attend.

11. I doubt all this military is to stop protesters, it's to protect Shrub.
There are LOTS of people who hate him! I've never been to a Shrub appearance, (and never intend to go either), but I bet the route he travels, and the building he's in is under very heavy security. Wonder how many of the crowd is actually secret service, CIA & FBI?

You also have to remember there are to be representatives there from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the european Commission. Some of those folks have a lot of enemies too.

14. It's not to **protect** Bush...
...it's to shield his image. It doesn't look "presidential, assured, and commanding" to have protestors all over the place. That gives the impression you don't have everything under control, and is way off-message.

15. Doesn't look like a Pres. in control when he needs that many
guards either! Looks like a tip-off that even people in his own country might want to hurt him!
