Edited on Wed May-26-04 09:49 AM by oc2002
Its comming...maybe.

"Pending Draft Legislation Targeted for Spring 2005
The Draft will Start in June 2005

There is pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills: S 89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin at early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately. "
<snip>

Although many will say its 'not going to happen', why have a draft of the bill even out there?

1. ...
It is going to happen. 'Fraid to say that to fight numerous wars in numerous fronts, you're going to need a big force. Voluntary enlistings are down, so they'll need to make up the loss somehow.

2. Its already in the works.
Draft boards are already organized and I think they are taking volunteers to staff them. These are the enevitable consequences we are faced with.

For some of the 16 and 17 year olds, I wager the Navy and Air Force will start looking real attractive. I can't imagine how anyone in their right mind would volunteer to go to Iraq - They hate us there, and rightly so.

I think we already lost this colonial war but can't bring ourselves to admit it.

3. It will happen right after our 2nd planned terrorist attack this summer.
PNAC has a plan and it is working.

4. Time to Listen
Our elected and non-elected leaders better start doing their research and truly make some intelligent long term plans on how to solve some of these conflicts. Yes, that means listening to advice from other nations as well as the citizens of our own nation. Otherwise, forcing our young people to fight wars this nation is already struggling to accept or understand may backfire. At this stage in humanity wars should only be fought with substantial support from the citizens. This would require no draft.

If our leaders truly had an honorable vision the arguments could be framed in such a way that people would volunteer to do their part. That part may not be driving tanks into a foreign land. Stopping poverty is the only way to truly stop the recruitment of more terrorists. Workable solutions can only come through dialogue. The more people involoved and the more diverse the ideas the better. Fire-side chats, townhall meetings, asking for and listening to advice, responding to ideas with reasons why or why not certain solutions will or will not work. Visibility. Truth. Is there a leader in the world today that truly listens to his/her citizens. Where are our great leaders?

7. Snopes investigates, but doesn't convincingly debunk.
The status of their investigation into whether there will be a draft in 2005: Probably not. But nowhere in their investigation do they contradict the article they are investigating regarding the existence of these bills. Their only contention is that:

"However, both the Congressional bills were introduced back in January 2003 and have languished in committee ever since with seemingly little support."

No kidding! We've got a Presidential election coming up and not one politician is trying to drum up support for a draft? I fail to see how the fact these bills have "languished" means we will probably not have a draft in 2005. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel is already floating the issue as a trial balloon. And now the corporate media is shouting from the rooftops that there will be a terrorist attack in the U.S. before the election. As Snopes itself says:

"There is as yet no definitive answer to the question of whether or not the U.S. will reinstitute a draft. Obviously some thought has been given to the issue, but the possibility that such thoughts will be turned into reality appears rather small at this point. Still, conditions and attitudes can change very quickly — another event of the magnitude of the September 11 attacks could prompt some rapid shifts in government policy and public opinion."

Please remember that the bill for the Patriot Act had also "languished in committee" before September 11. But having it on the books helped expedite its swift passage after September 11. Make no mistake, the BFEE needs a draft to achieve the PNAC goals in Dumbya's second term.
