Of course this suggestion would not be operable in a campaign setting, but hear me out. It may work if Kerry gets into office. Should Kerry win I suspect the Left in this country will cut him very little slack and show very little patience with regard to the war in Iraq. Meanwhile, the Right will suddenly discover that the war has become a "quagmire" and that we need to be more aggressive.
How can Kerry get us out? Simple, by assuming the ostensible Bush Administration policy of leaving Iraq if the new government asks us to leave. I have no doubt that by early 2005 the whole Iraqi political establishment will want us out. So I would have Kerry's foreign policy team privately tell the Iraqi government that we would like to get out of Iraq but that we will have to be asked so as to save face politically. Then we get out. When the neo-cons, back to work in their think tanks and as "Fox News Contributors", whine and complain, Kerry should just say that he is continuing Bush Administration policy of only staying in Iraq as long as the new government wants us there.
