Gore's speech was not a trial balloon . . . it was a preview . . .
I just finished watching Gore's speech on CSPAN . . . it was incredible . . . in a sane world (as opposed to this corporatocracy), it would have been one of the top two or three stories on every newscast, and received extensive coverage . . . instead, it was merely an afterthought . . .

make no mistake . . . Gore didn't freelance this . . . the decision to go on the attack in no uncertain terms was made in consultation with the Kerry campaign, not to hoist a trial balloon, but to preview things to come . . . what Gore said today will become the substance of the presidential campaign when the time is right . . . what we saw today was the opening salvo . . .

and the reason it was Gore and not Kerry delivering this speech goes back to one of the oldest and most time-proven axioms of politics . . . "When your opponent is self-destructing, stay out of his way." . . . if Kerry were to launch such an attack now, the substance would be lost because he would be accused of just playing politics . . . by having Gore do it, the Democrats were signaling that they understand the real issues and are ready to take them right to Bush's face . . . when the time is right . . . having engaged the administration in this manner, there's no turning back now . . . after the convention, we'll start hearing similar sentiments from Kerry himself and from other Democratic candidates . . . because what this speech signaled is that the Democrats have decided to tell the American people the truth about BushCo . . . and that's the best news I've heard in a long, long time . . .

so watch out, Bush . . . we're comin' to getcha! . . . and with both barrels blazing . . .

1. I noticed that he used the term "checks and balances" like
Wes Clark did in Alabama last week. And Clark also touched on the theme of what kind of country we are...that "moral" theme...lightly.

3. The Democrats will be hitting
them from all directions now and goodness knows Bush has enough directions for them to come from. He has botched everything from soup to nuts. AND the media will be eating it all up.

5. yes, for now . . . but this speech signaled that . . .
the Democrats are going after BushCo by telling the truth . . . and Kerry will no doubt join the chorus when the time is right . . . being overly cautious when the country is going to hell gives no one any reason to vote for you . . .

4. Hope you're right about this. Though I've only seen

a clip from the speech, Gore was certainly not pulling any punches. And that's what Dems need to do -- tell the truth and not make nice to the GOP. The right will think it's hell, of course, and complain mightily.

6. Gore's Speech was fantastic - your right- more of this coming & the US...
...public will start hearing more of this until it finally starts to sink in...

My only question is why, why has it taken so long? Has the Democratic party only been waiting long enough to take the relay race to the finish line and meanwhile wait quietly while the Bush Administration drops the baton? If Congressional Democrats and others had spoken out sooner like this, could we have avoided this war?

Well, better later than never...now I want to see more and more come out and speak out about these very issues and with some fire in the belly....

9. They have been talking all along
Kennedy and Byrd, and Byrd even before the war... his speech before the war was INCREDIBLE... as well

IT is the media that has NOT shown you ANY of this, by choice

10. Like me, Gore is old enough to remember Truman,

who was often urged "Give 'em hell, Harry!" by Dem supporters.

Truman himself said, "I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."

Many Americans today don't remember Harry Truman but will respond positively to tough and truthful talk.

12. "Sour grapes, Back-seat driving, 20/20-hindsight."

The GOP won't be able to dispute the message, so they'll "kill the messenger." Mark my words. It's what they do very well, and Al Gore does not have the political weight he thinks he does ... or he'd be in the Whitehouse.

Still, it's good to see Gore let it all hang out. Great speech he delivered yesterday.

(ediyed for clarity)
