Where was Jeb Bush during his Vietnam Era draft eligibility?

Seriously, that came up at a meeting tonight (well, the coffee afterward). I had a high school classmate that stupidly (for the early 70s) decided to take a year off to travel before college---he has the SAME birthday as Jeb Bush. My friend was drafted, sent to Vietnam and didn't come home.

How come I never see (or can find) one shred of info on Jeb Bush and his draft status back in the day? Anyone know?

He was born in 1953, graduated high school in 1971 when college draft deferments were done away with. He garduated from UT in 1974 when the war and the draft were safely over. I believe I remember hearing that his lottery numbers were high, and the draft was not taking as many men by 1971-72 anyway.

We graduated in 1971 and the number they drew was low enough to be called up---Jeb Bush has *never* that I can find addressed his participation in the draft, any deferments or anything related.

Perhaps he graudated in 1970. Because he finished college in 1974 at the age of 21 that means he either graduated high school at 17 or college in 3 years. So his high school graduation was either in 1970 (which would give him a different lottery number) or in 1971.

It is something he brags a lot about, especially when he's trying to convince people to cut HS to just three years.

You know I am not sure at all but that popped into my mind for some reason. Could be he was still at college. I do not think he went to Yale or a place like that.

I guess he registered, but I don't know if he got any special treatment to avoid it, or was just lucky:

His mother was quoted as saying in a 1984 interview with United Press International that Bush considered filing for status as a conscientious objector. But Bush said Friday that his mother later said she was misconstrued in the article and that he never considered filing as a conscientious objector.

Bush registered for service during his freshman year, but the war was slowing and he was never called. ''I got a physical,'' he said. ``I was prepared to serve.''

I'll go out on a limb and say he did.

This Family has cost and continues to cost all Americans, arguably more money and the LIVES,BLOOD,SWEAT and TEARS of the entire Nation along with the rest of the World than any other Family in history. We graduated High School the same year and both of our draft numbers were the same, as we had the same birthday..

that draft Number was 26..

I believe that year they were expecting to be drafting up to the number 170 or so and seeing the writing on the wall I talked a pal into joining the US Air Force with me that year (1971)..

It looked like I didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting out of it so rather than take the 2 year draft into the dreaded "ground pounders" (army) I chose the USAF because I thought I could just fly over and drop pretty colors on dirt and then fly away for only 4 years, keeping farther away from the action, the diseases, the rats, etc, etc..

How Bush got out of it is a good question, one that I would like to know myself..

The war was winding down tho and I'm pretty sure that they got past my draft number, but I've never been all that interested in finding out..

but now I am :)
