A Good Man died Today

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Midwest/05/26/obit.dellinger.ap/index.html

David Dellinger, dead at 88

"You want us to be like good Germans, supporting the evils of our decade, and then when we refused to be good Germans and came to Chicago and demonstrated, now you want us to be like good Jews, going quietly and politely to the concentration camps while you and this court suppress freedom and the truth,"

"And the fact is, I am not prepared to do that."

2. I used to hang with his son, Danny.
When I made the connection and Danny confirmed that he was, indeed, the son of David Dellinger, you should have heard me: I became a babbling fool about what a great man his dad was.

I think I embarassed us both. ;-)

3. Let's rise a protest sign to his mmeory
Here's to a man who didn't allow himself to be confined to a "Designated Free Speech Zone".

In his memory, let's protest the Republican Convention in New York, and let's tell the Democrats to get rid of "Free Speech Zones" in Boston.

Thanks for the post, stavka (wasn't stavka the Red Army's General Staff/High Command?)

8. STAVKA
Yes - the STAVKA was similar to the Joint Chiefs or the German General Staff/OKW and used by both the Tsar and Soviet Russians

I had to choose a unique name more than a decade ago at work, and my own last name was already taken by my brother. STAVKA was the name of a political gaming and simulation group I was then trying to get off the ground.

Everybody I know assumes its some slavic version of Stephen, my name.

I am by the way neither a czarist or stalinist or even a Russophile, its just a word whose sound I like with leftist coloring.

5. He was my attorney during the no-nukes late 70's
Well, for me and 100 others who went over the fence at Indian Point NY in an act of civil disobedience...

He will be missed.

6. A Great Man
Dellinger was a man of great courage and moral clarity who truly understood the meaning of "speaking truth to power" ...

In his final book, "Vietnam Revisited", the dedication read as follows:

"To all veterans of the Vietnam War; those who fought in it and those who fought against it."
