Pom-poms, pep and panties
Women's groups nationwide inject some attitude in activism in a 'creative resistance' to the GOP's policies

Women arriving in New York this summer will bring pom-poms and panties along with their political posters when they protest the Republican National Convention.

Hoping to add wit and femininity to the traditionally male-dominated protest scene will be Axis of Eve, whose members flash their underwear as a form of protest, and the Radical Cheerleaders, a political pep club that practices "activism with pom-poms and middle fingers extended."

The women's groups from across the country that are spending the summer organizing political Pantyware, rather than Tupperware, parties in preparation for RNC rabble-rousing have come a long way from their bra-waving forbears of the 1960s women's rights movement. Besides skits, songs and role-playing, some groups use their sexuality to deliver political messages.

Axis of Eve members, for example, with their skimpy panties emblazoned with racy political logos such as "Weapon of Mass Seduction," are a far cry from stereotypical burly union and bearded hippy protesters.

1. How trivial can you get--maybe MTV can video tape it.
The country is in dire serious trouble and they're going to wave panties? People are dying and we have over 3,000 amputee's
Pom-poms and knicker's is what they come up with?!? Maybe the Pom-Poms should send an invitation to the New World Order to make an accepting speech?

2. It's silly, but I appreciate the activism
I'll bet they aren't the silliest group who will show up at the convention protests. More power to 'em, I say.

6. Waving panties to protest death, torture, disease and mutilation
This will just provide fodder for the GOP on how we on the left view the war.

7. Only if we buy the lie that republicans abhor sexuality
or sex-based appeals. Who controls the advertising biz? Liberals? I doubt it.

8. Big difference in sexuality and a tittering pom- pom panty war protest.
Republicans do own everything and all you see from them is a lie.
I not discussing the sex thing, that's not it. The progressive's/liberals will be suckerpunched by this.

This will likely be one of the least controversial groups, despite the prospect that they may be the most titillating.

11. the way you tie this up to make it appear that they are unconcerned
about war is too much. Folk can disagree about how we protest but I think it's a cheap shot to imply that they don't care as much about the soldiers as you do because they will spend a day to protest Bush in this way.

Cheap shot.

5. So you don't think girls protesting in panties will get national attention
I think it is brilliant. For a nation so hung up on sex and violence what else will get the media to pay attention. "You go Girl(s)"

13. Should they all cut their arms off?
Part of demonstrating is people outside your ideological group paying attention... what the hell is wrong with flashing panties?

A cheeky protest
Bay Area anti-war activists go nude in surge of creative vigils-

Whether it's Singing for Peace serenading BART riders or a man beaming a PowerPoint message on an Interstate 580 overpass, homegrown activists are taking their message to the streets. They are bypassing mainstream media outlets they say are ignoring their pleas for a peaceful resolution to the Iraqi crisis. They're tired of pundits accepting war as a foregone conclusion and giving little airtime to diplomatic solutions.

Yet Sheehan said her group isn't full of activists, or "bored Marin housewives," as one naysayer referred to them. Their Jan. 4 protest -- in which they spelled "No War" on a Marin pasture -- in more waitresses (seven) than Ph.D.s (six), more social workers (four) than doctors (two) and only two self-described " '60s radicals." None was a nudist -- until recently.

They are Sheehan's friends, and their friends, recruited through concentric e-mail list circles. The first participants were all from West Marin, but now they come from San Francisco, Berkeley and points beyond, all frustrated about not seeing their views represented.

Making themselves so publicly vulnerable, Sheehan said, is a frantic semaphoric wave in the face of mainstream media indifference to the anti-war effort.
