Unhappy with Judith Miller's reporting on Iraq's weapons-of-mass-destruction before the Iraq War?

If you think Judith Miller should be investigated for a possible resignation, please tell the New York Times Public Editor:

To reach the public editor, Daniel Okrent, e-mail
public@nytimes.com
or telephone (212) 556-7652.

1. I'm more upset with the NYT for having apparently shut down
their fact-checking department. While I'm not trying to defend her, it's becoming quite obvious that they demand absolutely no proof of anything (and I'm still mad about when Will Shortz wanted me to fill in a crossword with "Terps" as an ACC powerhouse. Fact check THAT!)

I'll probably do that! Should I put in the part about Will Shortz' crappy crossword puzzle clues?

They didn't want proof of what they knew they'd find.

12. I'm sending my resume in
to the NY Times. My name will be listed as Jason Blair. Amazing how he can lie about a few feel good stories, yet Judith Miller lies about war, causing thousands of deaths, and they bury it in the paper.

13. Done. Here is what I wrote.
I have always enjoyed your paper and have counted on it to bring me the best and most reliable news.

However, it appears that you have completely lost the ability to fact-check your articles. While Judith Miller, as an intelligent and educated person, certainly bears some responsibility for thinking Ahmed Chalabi could possibly be considered a reliable expert on any matter other than choosing silk ties, this is not the first time your paper has been caught a few facts short of a load.

I am curious to know the size of your fact checking department, the methods employed, and what proof your writers need to provide to show that their facts are in place.

17. I got a reply!
Dear Ms. M:

Thank you for your message and your query which might make for a good column or web journal topic for Mr. Okrent-- you can be assured I will suggest it to him.

Mr. Okrent will be writing about The Times's coverage of weapons of mass destruction in his column on Sunday.

Sincerely,
Arthur Bovino
Office of the Public Editor

It's nice that someone at the NY TIMES read your email.

Too bad he didn't say what the size of their fact-checking dept. is, or what kind of review process article's like Judith Miller's go through.

If they keep her, what will we think the next time we read one of Judith Miller's columns?

I'd wonder if Chalabi, or someone as dishonest as Chalabi, give her the information in the article.

If the NY Times asks Judith Miller to resign, it will send a signal that journalists need to be more than stenographers. They're supposed to get opposing opinions.

Judith Miller should have spent more time talking to people like Dennis Kucinich, who were unconvinced there were weapons-of-mass-destruction in Iraq.
