Will someone please wake me?

This is not the America I remember when I fell asleep. And I had a terrible nightmare.

When I went to sleep, America was a peaceful, benevolent country that was the beacon of hope for the downtrodden and oppressed, not some "Lord of the Flies" mob that flings shit on prisoners.

When I went to sleep, military officers took responsibility for what happened under their command, and they didn't try to pass the buck.

When I went to sleep, the American government was the champion of civil rights, not the menacing oppressor that would pass a constitutional amendment that would openly discriminate against a group of people because of what they believed or did in the privacy of their own home.

When I went to sleep, peaceful protest was protected under the Constitution. When I awoke, it was something that could get you turned in to the authorities for violating something called, ironically, the Patriot Act.

When I went to sleep, we had a budget surplus that would help take care of the old, the infirmed, and the poor. Now we are so far in debt my grandchildren's children will feel the effects of what is happening today.

When I went to sleep, we were the leader of the world, now we are the world's scorn.

Well, goddamnit, I'm awake. And I will not sleep again until these things I know are wrong are fixed.

It's become such a bizarro world. I even wonder if we can ever put a country together again on this soil that can remotely resemble what we've left behind.

Much worse and blatant than it's ever been, but we've been at this for a LONG time. Just look at our involvement in South America.

i'm younger than you, all my "working years" before bush were under clinton, so i didn't "need" to be so aware of politics. i voted for nader and jesse ventura because i could! my vote, as an independant, meant something then. fwiw no way i would ever vote nader now. ventura was a good choice for mn. at the time. i have no regrets. i just wonder if the dems can really take advantage of what they have going for them right now? i didn't realize how good we had it in the 90's. i'm not here for the fun of it, though it is fun in a certain dark way, i'm here as my duty as an american. how cheezy.
