Appathetic co-workers...
How do you guys handle (or not) appathetic co-workers? I work in a very tightknit work place and so many of the folks I work with simply don't give a flying fuck about what's going on. It's more then "there's nothing I can do about it". It's like blank stares and a complete ignorance of the fucked up mess we are in. A few of the women have kids that are around 16-17 and I've brought up the spector of the draft and basically they look at me like I'm a nutbag (which may or may not be true) and go back to their InStyle magazines.
Anyone else experience this?

1. That's the times we live in
If one does not have friend or family in Iraq it is very easy for that person to go about life like nothing is happening. There is no draft, and 21st century life and popular culture provides people, especially the middle class, with more than enough ways to tune out the events in the Middle East. Don't want to hear about the war? Just turn the channel to one of our many speciality channels that are still stuck in 1999, as if there was no war or 9/11. With the draft and only 3 real channels on TV it was very hard to avoid the Vietnam War in the late-1960's.

2. All the time. I'm also dumbfounded...
....why everyone isn't running around amazed and babbling about why NORAD failed to stop to 9/11 Pentagon attack, etc. etc. etc.

I learned from my boyfriend, that my approach toward "educating" people on these issues is more likely to make me look like a kook. He said I sounded like I was part of a cult when I talked.

So I generally DON'T talk about it except with people I know who think like I do.

3. I get a few jabs in here and there,
unfortunately, they too are met with blank stares. I don't think I ever noticed before this administration just how apathetic and unintelligent the average American was.
DO you remember the movie Scrooge, when he's being shown the past and he tries to talk to the people there and the spirit tells him, "They can't hear you." That's how I've been feeling. Like they can't hear me.

5. Honest to God
my partner and I are seriously talking about becoming ex-pats as soon as we can. I'm not very enamored with Americans who's idea of nirvana is a mini mansion in the burbs and a SUV to run the kiddies back and forth to football practice...and everyone else can just go fuck themselves...I know I generalize but I'm REALLY cranky this morning...LOL

4. ain't it the truth
Two supervisors in my workplace were SHOCKED and surprised when I said that Faux News is not news, not fair and balanced and is an extreme republican view of the world. "It is?" said one. Then the other one asked what news was the Democrat channel. I said, "none".
Blank looks from there. Now the person who sat there and shook his head in agreement with me all during this was a lower level worker who worked in a union shop for 20 years or so. There is a lot of willful ignorance out there, but in this case I realized these two weren't even aware, sort of like fish in water, that they were being propagandized.

One watches sports almost exclusively and the other zones out on the food channel. Then hit Fox News for an hour or two a day.
