The draft - intelligence in freeperland (!!!)
I know, I know. You don't believe it. Neither did I. Nevertheless, you ought to check out this thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1143808/posts

Here are some excerpts:

Ladies and Gentlemen (yes, Ladies, too), you are about to receive the greatest infringement possible upon your freedoms, one that would cause any other intrusions of the Welfare State into your lives to pale by comparison. For, you see, this planned intervention could quite easily kill you.

The twin bills S 89, sponsored by Senator Fritz Hollings (D) and HR 163, sponsored by Representative Charles Rangel (D) are currently pending before the Armed Services Committee. They would legitimize a nationwide draft of individuals aged 18 to 26, male or female, rich or poor, college students or workers or parents or professionals of any sort. You will not be able to flee to Canada, due to a 2001 “Smart Border Declaration” that would apprehend all potential draftees seeking to do so. And time is running out. This draft could be implemented as early as July of 2005. If a resistance effort is to be amassed, it must begin today.

- - - snip - - -

- Discuss the issue with everyone you know. Inform them of the imminent personal threat to them or their loved ones, for everyone is certain to possess some manner of acquaintance or relation that will be impacted by a draft. If your partners in conversation are of the intellectual sort, engage them in profound, abstract discussions that will convince them to contribute their “heavy artillery” to this campaign.

- Copy and reprint this article and any others of my work concerning the draft in any manner and any medium you deem fitting! The more people receive this message, the more are likely to participate. The more participate, the more secure your future and the future of freedom will be. Either the draft will die, or you shall.

- - - snip - - -

It also has some ideas to oppose the draft. Maybe those of us who do should start fighting it now, instead of after the fact?

1. Perhaps the Freeps main objection is who's sponsoring the bills?
Would they be as objectionable if it was Prick Sanctomonious or Inhofe sponsoring this shit?

6. Probably not.
And they probably wouldn't mind some loopholes and deferments.

Still, allies of any sort - even "morans" - might be of value.

12. Actually, I think it's brilliant...
on the part of Hollings & Rangel to bring this ugly matter out into the open. Maybe it will make the hyper-bellicose, "let's you and him fight" repukes sit down and shut up. Well, no, of course not, but at least the hideous unfairness of our poorest children fighting the wars instigated by and on behalf of the wealthiest fatcats may possibly be debated openly in congress. Imagine their horror at the possibility of their pampered darlings being forced to undergo military training! As long as our military consists of "okies," "trailer trash," "coloreds," and other members of the underclass with no other prospects, there will be no end to these unnecessary for-profit wars. The draft proposed by Hollings and Rangel has no chance of passing, but I hope it will shake things up a bit. Lord knows, something needs to.

3. WTF?
Let me get this straight:

Two guys on OUR side want to re-instate the draft...?

The guy who posted this is a REPUBLICAN POET...?!

The first Freeper to respond talked SHIT about Halliburton...?

This strange chain of occurances brings to mind the timeless elementary school quote: "I love you... and it's opposite day."

4. Shocking I tell ya
You know you would think that could put all those feelings of patriotism and love for their leader into action - by willfully and gladly enlisting their sons and daughters - so there wouldn't have to be a draft. They all will tell you that an army/armed force with people forced to be there does not work - this is a golden opportunity for them to put their money where there mouth is - so to speak.

21. God forbid a freeper
do anything to help the conflict. They'd rather bitch.

To loosely quote Sam Seaborn from "The West Wing" in regards to whether or not Ainsley Hayes was accepting the job as Associate White House Council (Ainsley being right of, say, the Kaiser): "Why get a job in the system helping out when you get get one commenting on it?"

5. oh, boo hoo
For months, no world wide intervention by Godly, Kick Ass, Great Leader
Bush was unacceptable to Freeperland. They bragged unceasingly about
how the military was all "red-state, GOP, Bush-loving". They loved to
say "kick their ass and steal their gas". Oh, and that this was a 'battle of
civilizations', the be-all, end-all Battle Royale against Evil and Terra.

But now that there's the slightest chance they'll be called out of their
f*cking Red State trailer parks, they want to whine? Hahahahahahaha!

Like I kept telling them...if *I* thought this was a Clash of Civilizations;
if *I* thought Hussein's mighty armies were going to hit the beaches
of Charleston, Ocean City and Rockaway Beach...I'D BE THE FIRST TO
PICK UP A F*CKING GUN AND GO DEFEND MY COUNTRY.

But these tools just want the glory, the power and to watch it all on TV.

I say bring back the draft! I'm too old! Hahahahahaha! Hey Freeperland?
can I call you Private Pyle? Hey, Mayo-naize? Drop and gimme 20! Go
defend "Civilization" (you know, NASCAR, WWF, McDonald's and Bush/
Cheney'04) from the 'godless muslimoids'! I wanna watch YOU on TV for
awhile!

And I want you to think about the DRAFT every time BushCo says something
belligerent  about Iran, Syria, NK, Venezuela, and Columbia, (not SUDAN tho'!).
And remember how much you LOOOOOVE kickin' ass and George W. Bush.

Then go to hell, losers.

Bigby

Edited on Fri May-28-04 10:05 AM by Hubert Flottz
I'm too old to go too but then I've already been drafted once and I can't wait to see the enablers on TV humping the desert for their sins!

EDIT} The Freepers can always follow the example of their "Great Leader" and go AWOL if they find out they can't cope with being away from their Mommy! Sympathy is in the dictionary between Shit And Syphilis if the Chicken hearted are looking for it! It will make a man out of ya son!

7. How a freep can get off the selective service list -
1. Run to the local Army recruiter's office

2. Flunk the mental test by repeatedly proclaiming - "I want to go abuse some Raghead ass!"

Oh, the irony of how the truth can set them free.

As a way to tell the Chickenhawk Repukes that their kids have no place to hide, either. I posted an article yesterday that explains how a draft is highly unlikely. Here's the link:

9. the freeper was right about the need to discuss this issue
The draft boards are filling up and some old loop holes are now sealed shut. When I bring up the issue with people who don't know what's going on, I make a bet that the draft will be reinstated next year. Many of them laugh at first but then look horrified once I start going into the details. The younger people I talk to don't want to believe what's happening.

Speaking of young people, is MTV news discussing the issue? A flood of emails about it might spur them to do a little investigating (not that it's too difficult finding the info). Since network news doesn't seem to be covering it, maybe informing college newspapers and MTV wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Can someone help me out on a few things? I keep reading odd things about the "new and improved" draft and it's getting to the point where I'm having a hard time seperating fact from fiction. Sometimes I hear women will be drafted too this time, other times I hear we won't be. I've also heard that the age cap will be increased but I can't imagine a need for that.

20. I hope this helps
the info on this page checks out. Many of the gov web pages have changed since bush took office and only the basic info is easy to find.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig4/wiggins5.html

This is the Selective Service reclassification I refer to in my previous post -

17. Registrant not acceptable for military service (Class 4-F)

To be eligible for Class 4-F, a registrant must have been found not qualified for service in the Armed Forces by a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) under the established physical, mental, or moral standards.

When the MEPS determines that a registrant is not qualified, the MEPS will report this decision to the Selective Service System. Selective Service will reclassify the registrant into Class 4-F and notify the registrant of the reclassification.

10. In typical Freeper fashion, what he fails to mention is...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 09:46 AM by Rob H.
...that Chuck Rangel (R-NE) is also saying that a draft may be necessary.

Excerpt:
A Republican {emphasis added} U.S. senator is calling for a return of the military draft so the cost of the Iraq operation could be borne by people of all economic strata.

Speaking at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on post-occupation Iraq, Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said, "There's not an American ... that doesn't understand what we are engaged in today and what the prospects are for the future."

Hagel, a member of the committee, says all Americans should be involved in the effort.

"Why shouldn't we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?" Hagel said, arguing that restoring the draft would force "our citizens to understand the intensity and depth of challenges we face."

The senator also argued re-instituting the draft, which ended in the early '70s, would cause the burden of military service to be spread among all economic classes of people.

"Those who are serving today and dying today are the middle class and lower middle class," he claimed.

Edit: Oops! Oh, dopey me. I didn't know that Rangel opposed the war in Iraq. Here's some more info at MTV.com

Excerpt:
So why would Hagel and Rangel, both smart politicians, propose such a thing? Shock value, perhaps. Rangel, an opponent of the Iraq war, introduced his legislation during the run-up to the war as a way to force supporters to examine the extent of their commitment. For Hagel, a supporter of the war, his comments were most likely intended to force the public to realize that the war on terror would be a lengthy struggle requiring sacrifices from those in all walks of life.

The freeper still didn't mention Rangel's support, though.

19. Where is their patriotism?
They should be foaming at the mouth in favor of this. Don't they want to support the troops? "Imminent personal threat to them" Are they against supporting their "Chosen" leaders? Are they afraid? Chickenhawks one and all it would appear.
