I NEVER KNEW I WAS ELITE
I am retired now after almost fifty years in broadcast journalism. I have worked for NBC, CBS, CNN and have reported on a stringer basis for the BBC, Radio Ireland, and a bunch of other broadcast operations around the world. I have traveled alot, I read a lot, and I have three college degrees.

Now, I keep hearing my colleagues referred to as "the media elite."
I am really not sure what that means, even after all these years of hearing that term used. When I was assigned a story to cover, I did just that and I worked alongside other reporters, some nationally known and others totally unknown but we all did the same things and usually in the same manner. So what made me elite and not them?

I was never paid to report a story one specific way or to slant a story. If a story of mine carried a bias of any sort it was because I am who I am and not because I was instructed to. In this, I can only speak for myself.

So, why am I "elite"? Because I have traveled to several parts of the world? Because I have interviewed important people? I don't socialize with those people. I have not been invited to their homes nor have they come to mine. Am I elite because, prior to my retirement, I had an audience who hopefully benefited from some of my reports?

I tend to think those who use the term "elite" use it because of envy. Not envy of me personally but envy of what I do. I may be totally wrong in this but what the heck.....I'm retired now and having a ball watching grass grow.

2. Congrats on being an old school journalist.
The "industry" has changed rather radically since the deregulation began under raygun.

The corporatization of the media and the world has streamlined the propaganda process.

The meme of "media elite" is an obfuscatory prevarication about the supposed liberal slant of the media, which as any still thinking person can perceive, is a laughable concept.

3. It's funny
It's funny how they have turned the word elite into a slur. (Intellectual elite, WA elite, Media elite...) It's just more of the anti-intellectual, dumbing down of our culture. How dare we think for ourselves, do our jobs well and still not agree with them. I hope every day that the worm is turning however and the media starts standing up for this country. The press is still the most powerful weapon we have to defeat these scum. They need to tell the truth.

5. It's the medocritization of the USA (and beyond)
What is that one "Get Your War On" 'toon? It says something like "If being an elitist means not being the dumbest motherfucker in the room, then I'm an elitist!" lol

6. It's another one of those buzzwords that seem to blossom
on cable, like "scenario" when they mean situation.

And it's also some kind of political demonization. Don't let it bother you. If you've devoted fifty years to such a noble cause, you are to be commended!

7. it's just a way of marginalizing what you do/did
If a journalist reports something that is not the ranting of a rightwing syncophant, then they must be called elite.
Of course there is a beltway kool kids Krowd who might actually be the media elite. They seem to be more of an echo chamber than actual journalists.

8. Part of a push on Anti-Intellectualism
which is a cover for lapping up propoganda uncritically, and having someone else to point to when things don't go well (because of the policies that resulted from that illconceived propoganda). A form of bigotry being perpetrated by the rightwing talking heads, and some politicized pulpits (now given complete voice by our President who refers to the "media elite" and other intellectual segments of our society as "FANCY PANTS INTELLECTUALS".)

In a major university town, one of the fundi ministers made it a point to weekly preach about the "evil shadow" cast by the university - even though a good chunk of its audience had links to the U, and the church resided across a major thoroughfare from the big basketball stadium ... home of one of the ten major long-time basketball powerhouses in the country - and no question a place that many congregants attended (or watched on TV) 'religiously'... yet every week - had to, so I understand, preach against the 'evil shadow' cast by the (intellectuals at) the university.

And yes, I would say there is some jealousy there, as well.

9. I grew up with the term elite being complimentary
US Navy SEALS are the Elite. Special Forces are the Elite The US Olympic team is the Elite. Be proud of being considered the Elite. It means you stand above the rest. It is a compliment. And so is Liberal IMHO.

10. Question for you...
I was going to ask this in another section, but since you posted - I'm going to ask you this question...

I understand and know the source of the bias coming from Fox News with Roger Ailes at the helm. I understand Rupert Murdock and the bias in his media.

What I don't understand is CNN's. I don't bother with cable so I'm not personally familiar with what other posters on this site refer to as CNN's bias, the the posters are sure of the bias of CNN and many of its broadcaster.

What's the story?
Is CNN deliberately (i.e., directed by mgt.) biased?
Why/why not?

11. being 'elite' isn't difficult
All you need to do to be considered 'elite' by the Republicans is to have at least a sixth grade education and read at least one book a decade.

Such 'intellectualism' means that you soar out of the ranks of the GOP and into the arms of the 'elite', because anyone with half a brain could see through the real 'elite' of the Republican party: the greedy 2% at the top who are laughing at the GOP rank-and-file all the way to the bank.

Is there any doubt as to why the Republicans thrive on ignorance, and attack anyone who is even minimally educated?
