I just saw Hillary in Kansas City!

She got a standing ovation when she walked in the room, a long, enthusiastic one.

She was signing her book. About a thousand people showed up -- the tickets were all given out the day the book went on sale.

There were two anti Hillary people across the street, dressed like devils and with a sign that said Bill Sold His Soul to the Devil. Or something like that. A pair of obvious losers.

Dean and Clark people worked the crowd, as well as someone selling Hillary in 2008 buttons. I would have bought one, but I'd left my purse in my car because I'd been warned we couldn't bring purses in the booksigning line. There wasn't a metal detector, however.

She was as gracious and warm as she could have been given I stood in front of her for perhaps six seconds while she signed my book. I said, "Thank you for everything you've done."

I'm thrilled I got to see her.

Sure beats going to an Ann Coulter book signing.

Several months ago at a book signing sponsored by this bookstore (Rainy Day Books in Fairway, KS, a very good store) one of the employees was telling me about the upcoming authors, including Al Franken sometime in October (I'm already on the list for tickets to that one) and perhaps Molly Ivins someday. I was oohing and ahhing over those, and he said something about trying to get Ann Coulter in, whereupon I said that if they got her I'd picket the event as she's complete scum. He was quite startled at the vehemance of my response.

I mean it. If they got her in town I'd seriously reconsider every buying books from them again, and I'd tell them why.

Where was she in Kansas City? I feel ashamed of myself because I wasn't even aware she was going to be so near where I live.

Rainy Day Books does stuff there several times a week. The Hillary signing was sold out the day her book came out, so you would have needed to have gotten a ticket back then.

Tomorrow night will be Jon Krakauer with his latest book "Under the Banner of Heaven" about Mormons. I'll be there.

On August 22 I forget the name of the author but the book is "A Traveler's Guide to Mars" and they'll have telescopes set up and I think will be giving away some nice binoculers. But don't hold me to that last.
