Kerry picks Lieberman for VP

NASHVILLE -- Senator John Kerry's selection of Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut as his running mate has already accomplished one of its first objectives which was to shift the media's attention (and hence the public's) away from the Pres. George Bush and his repackaged Republicans.

The selection of Lieberman is being hailed by political analysts and pundits as one of the shrewdest moves Kerry has made since the start of the campaign. In one bold stroke, Kerry has declared his independence from the more embarrassing aspects of Clinton's reign by selecting a vocal Democratic critic of the president and undercut one of Bush's election strategies.

The Bush-Cheney campaign made it plain in Philadelphia that positioning themselves in opposition to Clinton's behavioral lapses would be an implicit centerpiece of their campaign (even if they never came right out and said so). Lieberman makes that much harder to do without resorting to the kind of tactics they vocally condemned at their convention.

"It was very clear after Philadelphia that these guys are going to run a campaign of innuendo and guilt by association," John From, president of the Democratic Leadership Council, told The New York Times. "It's going to be harder for Republicans to sustain that campaign. A Kerry-Lieberman ticket is not going to be associated with bad behavior."
