Is God really out there?
Is there a powerful benevolent force that will help us when we need it and and that is not the way that Pat Robertson et. al. describe him?

9. Is God Out There ? I Don`t Know. I`ve seen seen a few very strange things
during my life that seem to defy certain scientific principles. I saw a sugar bowl moving around on a kitchen table in an Apartment a former wife swore was haunted. This seems to suggest the existence of ghosts anyway. The sugar bowl was moving all over the table. There was no Earth tremors or trains. Nothing else in the Apartment was moving, just that sugar bowl. ...Oscar

'Ghosts'....

Considering the Earth is spinning at 18 ft/second, moving around the sun at a faster rate, solar system spinning along in the Milky Way, the galaxy flying through the universe...

Just what properties must ghosts have to be effected by gravity?

26. Good start as any...
... but most of those 10 or 11 dimensions are tightly bound in quantum space, not very conducive for observation at the macro level that we do function in. <smile>

But okay, if you'd like to suppose that scientists in another realm are 'crossing over' with some type of unknown quantum energy source which actual moves physical objects in this space-time realm... hey, sounds alright to me.

Ghostly maybe, but not ghosts!

Edited on Fri May-28-04 07:23 PM by papau
:-)

by the way - those other dimension only needed to be "other dimensions" for the math to work.

There was no need for them to be the QM states - except our need to not think of ourselves as shadows!

But the violence done to the word "dimemsion" seemed minor compared to saying we do not live in the real world - I guess -

but this is/was only a problem if you needed strings!

Thats why I like pure math - nothing need relate to anything "real" - but alas I have only worked in applied math.

39. Not only that but so called dark matter started appearing in our Universe
about 4 billion years ago and now makes up more than 90% of the matter in our Universe. The one property the physicists have attributed to it is that it repels the types of matter we are familiar with. One of the results of this is that the galaxies are moving away from each other at an ever increasing rate of speed. Many of these physicists believe and is possible and perhaps probable that an infinite number of Universes exist and that all the laws of physics and chemistry could be quite different there in many of them. For more on this do a google search using: dark matter or dark energy or dark matter+dark energy. ...Oscar

24. Actually the speed the Earth is spinning at changes, the closer to the
equater you are the faster you are moving and conversely : the further from the equater you are the slower you move. Also I suggested that this is the source of the unexplained energy input for Frank Polifkas WINDHEXE machine. The phenomenon is known as ANGULAR MOMENTUM TRANSFER. This WINDHEXE technology may be the answer to the Worlds energy crisis. When combined with known Depolymerization technologies I believe it is possible to turn any organic matter such as garbage, sewage, trees, plant matter of all sorts whose content is mostly so called carbohydrates of one form or another into usable fuels like gasoline, fuel oil whatever. If you want to find out about the WINDHEXE , simply do a google search using that one word: windhexe. ...Oscar

I've never really heard that we could NOT create alternative energy sources, it's just that they are not cost effective since there are cheaper means of energy (wind, water, fossil, etc).

Thanks for the link/subject suggestion!

I also noticed my cereal was making stange cracking noises last week. Some kind of rice cereal.

I'm convinced ghosts are responsible. Any suggestions on what I should do?

According to that exwife all sorts of strange things would happen while I was at work. I just told her not to worry about it. I was so tired and miserable from loading and unloading box cars full of tires all day I really didn`t care very much. I thought it was kind of interesting and that perhaps this ghost was trying to tell us something. If something bad starts happening I guess you can move. ...Oscar

67. God and self, with concepts of Quantum Physics - seems a few books
have explored that conbination.

Indeed faith/belief required by QM exceeds - IMHO - that required for religion.

Not that QM is not solid as a way to get QM type answers - just that when I saw the solutions to the equations, I said OK - but there must be something deeper we are not seeing.

15. "Dear God"
Dear God,
Hope you got the letter and
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat
From God
I can't believe in you.

Dear God,
Sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in the amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet

About God,
I can't believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too?!

Dear God,
Don't know if you noticed, but...
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book,
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you

Dear God,
I can't believe in...
I don't believe in...

I won't believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You're always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it's the same the whole world 'round.
The hurt I see helps to compound
That Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'd perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve.
If there's one thing I don't believe in.....

It's you.....
Dear God.

18. Yes and no.
There is a God, but it cannot be found "out there", only inside yourself. Its voice sounds an awful lot like your conscience. :)

It provides everything we really need, but ignores what WE say we need. If you expect God to be a magic wand, you will be disappointed. It knows better, and best. It loves us enough to let us learn from our mistakes. That can be good or bad depending on your outlook.

You get closer to understanding God when you consider everything in your life as a lesson; if it's a good event, the lesson is "show gratitude"; if it's bad, the lesson is to fix it or deal with it, thus exercising your will and furthering your growth.

Like where'd all this stuff come from. Oops, wrong thread.

I can be so existential, when I'm not fixing a diesel engine.

Yeah, I have trouble with infinity.

However, I don't have much trouble with Jesus. I think that if even one of his so-called miracles was really a miracle, then he was more than just a guy walking around. I believe he really was god's son. It's just too weird to be untrue. Yeah, all the other philosophies say a lot of the same stuff, but they didn't go walking around on water, and saying absolutely incredible things, and rising from the dead, and curing sick people, and preaching to love one's enemies, and on and on. He's no fake. But I guess we'll find out sooner or later. Meanwhile, Bush is making it impossible for me to love him. That asshole!

60. I see no evidence for it
And in a sense I think it diminishes the universe to postulate that it had to be created by an individual. But thats just my opinion. :D

63. No. Don't you think he'd have answered the prayers
of all those mothers whose babies die of cancer? Or those whose entire families were murdered in concentration camps? Or those who slowly bled to death in Rwanda?

If God ignores those prayers, heck, I'm not going to bother asking for squat.

65. Yes.
We have our physical senses, the stimulation of which is organized within the brain to create our sense of ourselves in the world. We also have faculties of mind -- thought -- and of the heart -- feeling.

It is possible, although rare, to come into contact with a completely different kind of feeling, a new 'senseation' of the heart that I call "a sense of the sacred." This 'sense' is evidence of the existence of something we might as well call 'God.'

When this sense is awakened everything else in life, including death itself, is put in a different perspective. But if you have not come into contact with this 'sense of the sacred' you do not know what I'm talking about or what I mean and so these words sound silly or useless. On the other hand, if you have felt it, even if only for a moment and even if not as deeply as one might hope, you will understand, at least a little bit, that the life we live, important though it is, is only a very very small thing that is part of something much much greater.

It is toward this 'greatness' that we must ultimately turn.

69. Yes, And Although Many Like To Personify That Benevolent Force
doing so often leads them to project their own personal limitations and misconceptions onto that Force.

The Universe exists for our Benefit. :)

You summed it up perfectly.

The real question is- another beer, or not?

By the way, I play trumpet.

And I see evidence.

78. You're here, ain't Ye?
Regarding Pat Robertson: The guy's nothing more than a gold-plated turd of the BFEE who abandoned his platoon before reaching Korea. Don't take my word for it, Pete McCloskey (R-California) talked about it back in 1988. He was a Marine officer on the same troopship and he saw it with his own eyes.

Check out:

http://www.schlatter.org/liquor_officer.htm

Now, the majority of his followers may never know that about Pat, the Liquor Officer. No problem. God knows.

We're insignificant creatures living on a tiny, irrelevant planet. We could all be wiped out by an asteroid tomorrow and nobody would notice or care. So you can't really blame people for inventing imaginary friends/saviors (e.g. God) when faced with this stark reality.
