Americans wouldn't recognize 'peace' if it was pissing on them
Edited on Fri May-28-04 03:50 PM by WilliamPitt
What is peace? When was the last time it existed for this country? When was the last time it existed in the world? Did it ever exist in this country? Was there ever a time when the population wasn't getting itself ginned up for war somewhere?

Not in chronological order, but you get the idea:

French-Indian Wars
Revolutionary War
Civil War
Mexico
War of 1812
The Indian Wars
Philipenes
Grenada
Central America
Korea
Vietnam
Laos
Cambodia
WWI
WWII
Iraq
Iraq II: Electric Boogaloo
Lebanon
Cold War
War on Terror
Cuba
Haiti (a few times)
etc.

That pretty much covers every second of the 228 years this nation has existed, and then some.

Would we even know peace if we saw it? I don't think so.

If some interstellar beings are keeping an Encyclopedia of the Universe, I wonder what the entry would be for us. Probably something like "Earth: Existed from years 214,331,561,962 to 309,414,822,021. Only planet in recorded Universal history whose inhabitants committed mass suicide by degrees."

Sad. Sad and frustrating.

1. Please, it's not just Americans
Everywhere all over this planet, from the dawn of man to the present day, there has always been those that would want to have power over others, take things from others. As long as there are those people, and they are not resisted by every other person, this will continue.

7. Ahh but they have a totally different culture
One that is very different from most others. You might even say they're the exception that proves the rule. :)

16. I was gonna mention 8 years of peace under Clinton
but then I remembered Bosnia and Somalia. Not really wars but military actions nonetheless.

Afghanastan is also missing from the list.

It is a sad list.

I have always been optimistic about the future of our species, that some day we would finally "get it" that we are on this fragile little blue ball together and we better all be in it for the world community. Just imagine what we could do with worldwide cooperation and peace.

I can add little more to your sentiments, thanks.

19. I was at Golden Gate Park in 1966 watching Jefferson Airplane
There is such a thing as peace. With most of us it has to come from within. We have been very fortunate in this country in that we have never really known war on our soil in our lifetime. What we know of as war comes from our TV set. That is most likely going to change unless we get more responsible leadership.

20. We are the most warlike nation in the world.
And we are smug and arrogant about it.

This strikes me as an especially poignant thought on the eve of the dedication of the World War II Memorial. Sometimes I think we, the children and grandchildren of that generation, have completely missed the point. And those of us who lived through the Viet Nam war should sure as hell have gotten the message. The ones who came after this time seem comfortable in their ignorance and the trappings of a life of comfort, despite all the evidence right under their noses..

I never have met a veteran who liked war, and the ones I know well regret the consequences. They only wanted to come home and live out their lives in peace and raise their families or otherwise move on.
