A CASH opinion of Al Gore's speech
From Rosanne's website:

My pick this month is AL GORE.

I heard him speak at NYU on May 26th, and it was a revolution. While he was speaking, I realized I had a great sense of relief that I was listening to a leader who did not have a hidden agenda, or a subtext, or motives that were unspoken and suspect, who was not in bed with the oil companies, who respected every dotted 'i' of the Bill of Rights and honored the system of checks and balances that is so essential to the sustainability of those Bill of Rights, who believed that those in powerful positions should be accountable for their actions and the actions of their subordinates, and who told the truth.

I had my father's cologne, a very specific smell, in my nose from the time I stepped into the taxi to go to NYU, until I was greeting Al in the dressing room after the speech. It was positively eerie. My father and I loved to talk politics, loved to get passionate with each other about our love for democracy, and this was right up his alley. I think he tagged along with me to hear the speech. And there is something about Al that reminds me of Dad; his Southerness, his dignity, his humility and innate shyness, his absolute integrity. I asked Al if he would just put me on his staff, and he graciously declined and said I should just keep writing songs. Okay, done!

If you want to read his brilliant speech, go to MoveOn.org.

2. Thanks for the post, Mom!
Rosanne stole my heart from the first moment I heard her voice, from the first moment I saw her eyes, and I always knew she had brains.

I am such a goner now!

3. Is she Johnny's daughter?
Inspiring piece she wrote about her meeting with Al Gore no matter who she is but I have always liked Johnny Cash's music so that adds some weight.

21. She's a first-rate songstress, as well
She and her ex-husband Rodney Crowell gave us some great country songs in the 80s, including the classic "Seven-Year Ache". She has a beautiful, forlorn voice that's unmistakably CASH.

8. Toots, you can even hear some of the timbre of Johnny's
voice in Rosanne's voice. You can tell they're related. When I first heard her do "Tennessee Flat-Top Box" it was goosebumps for days!

10. I just realized who her mother was
My mother used to date one of the Carter boys in Clinchport Virginia in 1940. It is a small world indeed.

11. Rosanne's mom is Vivian Liberto
Johnny's first wife. June Carter was Johnny's 2nd wife. She was his inspiration. It was because of June Carter that we got to enjoy Johnny's music the last 40 yrs. If it weren't for her he would of passed away a long time ago.

12. Don't forget the Dixie Chicks
I know there are others. George Jones campaigned for Wes Clark. Kris Kristopherson is also a liberal. I'm sure there are more, but I can't think of them right now...

Willie Nelson...

22. I kind of suspect Alan Jackson is a liberal
At least, a lot of his songs have a decided liberal bent.

I suspect that a whole lot of country singers are liberal/progressives, but they have to keep silent since the industry (and its kingmakers) are based in the heart of Dixie. Johnny Cash was a fearless son of a gun who sang from the heart and didn't care what the powers-that-be thought. And they let him do what he wanted, because he could easily kick all their asses.

18. you guys are right........
how quickly i forgot about the "chicks". i saw them a couple of months ago on an episode of graham norton (bbc america), and they are beautiful, both inside & out. my right leaning co-worker loves the dixie chicks, and even she thought that their demonization was a bit over the top. she never stopped supporting them. thanks guys..

tribute to Johnny Cash not long after he died.
