How fitting that the people will elect a Teutonic Knight in California.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 08:54 PM by The Lone Liberal
With the ouster of a duly elected Governor the Republicans undo one more stone in the bastion of democracy. Wealth triumphs once more in this nihilistic age of complacency. It is fitting that the king who shall snatch the will from the people is a Teutonic Knight. Sebastian Haffner in his book of unpublished papers, Defying Hitler writes of that time when it was too late for the German people to react against the Nazis.

“We were in the Nazis’ hands for good or ill. All lines of defense had fallen, any collective resistance had become impossible. Individual resistance was only a form of suicide. We were pursued into the farthest corners of our private lives; in all areas of life there was rout, panic and flight. No one could tell where it would end. At the same time we were called upon, not to surrender, but to renege. Just a little pact with the devil—and you were no longer one of the captured quarry. Instead you were one of the victorious hunters.”

When the wolves are amongst us, how soon will we liberals need to learn how to howl with the wolves?

2. "Any collective resistance had become impossible."
We saw with the antiwar demonstrations how futile collective resistance was to the will of the regime. Demonstrators were arrested and -- in some cases -- beaten for minor infractions like stepping off crowded sidewalks into the street. I have heard anecdotal evidence of this. In fact, I know someone whose videotaped evidence is being used in a court case to defend such a demonstrator.

How many have made that pact with the devil?

3. You just depressed the hell out of me.
In a class I took about the psychology of the Holocaust, we talked about the way things changed. It was little by little, until it was too late. Exactly what this author says.

I don't know what we do? The only thing that could turn the tide back is a massive Dem victory in 2004. And even then, most of the elected Dems have already sold their souls.

:(

4. head in the sand
a lot of you just cannot comprehend the genuine anti-Davis sentiment running wild out here in California.

The people ARE angry(who cares if the Republicans are the ones egging it on!). The fact remains that Californian's hate Davis.

Why should we be forced to endure a detested governor?

If the laws exist for a lawful re-call, then why can't we exercise our just powers?

Of course, if this was a Republican governor....nevermind.

5. Hearing Ahhhnuld Speechifying
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 09:30 PM by UTUSN
While I'm ready at the drop of a hat to attach whatever villanous names like "Nazi" to the Shrubbites and now Ahhhuld, I try not to do it lightly-------------so SERIOUSLY----the other day when Ahhhnuld was bombasting himself for the first time since announcing, it spontaneously recalled clips of HITLER or of HITLER's less prominent bombasters. Perhaps it's just his cultural template. I wasn't actively TRYING to pin the label on him. It came on its own.

I am sorry if you I thought inferred that he was a “Nazis.” He is one of the more clever Teutonic Knights.

7. His Bombast Just Spontaneously Was Reminiscent
in a less polished way. Was relating my experience not inferring.

8. Not this Free American!
It will very possibly mean jail or death to resist by the Mad Reign of George P. Caligula in the 2020s, but how can I do any less?

And as others have mentions, have you noticed the numbers of Democrats who are already howling with the wolves...in the case of Al From and Holy Joe, the tune is nearly indistinguishable...

9. I understand that the upside
of Arnold's being Governor (if that happens) is that he can then explain Bush's policies in their original German.
