We all know by now about the fines the Senate will begin assessing on the 11 Democrats currently in New Mexico. To wait out the whole session it will cost $57,000 per senator, or $627,000. I don't know how many of the senators are men and women of means, but some are not. It is important that the money be raised to keep them in New Mexico. If just one Democrat gets weak knees and jumps off the boat the quorum will be achieved (and, we should warn, that Democrat WILL get primaried in 2004). I doubt camapign funds can be used to pay the fines, but I would imagine fundraisers could be held, and the TX Democratic Party and the DNC could chip in.

3. Great for fundraisers! But why would they be required to pay fines
incurred by a bunch repugs without a quorum?

5. I doubt the
TX democratic party has much money.

I also question whether the Senate can vote to impose fines without a quorum. It seems nuts to me. Besides, I read that the Republicans met behind closed doors, and I think that's illegal.

Of course, the campaign ads that enabled them to take over state government were also against state law. They don't care.

7. What can we do to help?
If there is anyone out there associated with the Democratic Party/ Texas Democratic State Senators that can tell us where, what, and when on how to help out in this situation, it would be greatly appreciated. We need to stop this kind of action here and everywhere-Florida, Colorado, California, ......

13. what I don't understand is…
why Sen. Ken Armbrister, the one Democratic senator that remained in Texas, didn't object to this, and only asked if it was allowed without a quorom.

14. He's a DINO...
...at least a lot of the time. His district has lots of petroleum interests, so he tends to vote that way. He was one of the Republican targets when talk of quorum breaking first arose.

17. I remember reading that there was a reason for leaving one Senator behind…
but I don't remember what it was, or why Armbrister was that one Senator.

maybe he volunteered.
