Why is Bush's name on the WWII Memorial???
Is that normal? I don't remember any other president's name on any memorials? Wasn't the memorial project inaugurated under President Clinton (our last elected President)? If so, why is HIS name not on it as well?

16. So what?
If they're going to have former presidents who served in WWII, you'd think they'd have Eisenhower first.

(Maybe they do, I don't know)

Made me sick. Guess they are determined to plaster the bush name everywhere. Wasn't the CIA headquarters or part of it name after poppy bush.

We will never escape that name in our lifetime.

6. Oh well, think about it this way...
Akhenaton had his name plastered all over everything too, and after his death, his cartouche was systematically chiseled off, leaving very little evidence that he ever existed. Could happen.

12. Very good...Shelley was an interesting person...
died young, but his wife (the daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollestonecraft, and the author of Frankenstein), always had him with her, literally. As the popular legend goes, she had his heart removed after his untimely death and carried it with her, wrapped in a kerchief in her handbag, for the rest of her life.

17. Actually, they did him a favor!

Interestingly enough, Akhenaton is one pharaoh of whom we know more than of most kings of any dynasty.

The blocks of his temples were incorporated into other temples, *preserving* them from the elements. His city, Akhet-Aton was built on unused land and when it was abandoned, nobody moved in, which preserved the site... In retrospect, more people are familiar with him, his queen , Nefertiti and his succesor, Tutankhamon (thanks to the discovery of his tomb) than many other kings. Only Rameses and Cleopatra have arguably more "name recognition" than the family of Amarna.

Oh, and the quote in this thread about Ozymandias? Came from a poem about the famed "Colossi of Memnon" which were/are statues of amen-Hotep III the father of Akhenaton. They are in far better repair than the poem would have us think. :)

7. Bush Sr was president and never took a stand to get the....
Memorial of WWII started. The memorial was an initiative of Steven Spierberg as requested by his father, and Tom Hanks. They raised millions of dollars to make the dream come true for WWII heros. The bushes did shit but they highjacked the celebrations for juniors elections. Hate those Bastards.

13. Here's the FDR Memorial with WJC's Name on It

*******QUOTE*******

http://www.ohwy.com/dc/f/fdrmemor.htm

FDR requested that his memorial be no larger than his desk. In contrast to that wish, his memorial actually spans 7 1/2 acres in West Potomac Park. Dedicated in 1997, the memorial reflects the events and people of our 32nd President's era. Four outdoor rooms depict the unprecedented 12 years that FDR served as President, with each room focusing on one of his terms. The memorial contains 12 sculptures, plants, pools, waterfalls, fountains, quiet alcoves and 21 of Roosevelt's famous quotations carved in granite walls. ....

19. Yes
he designed it. I found this: "It’s built the way I wanted it to be built, so I’m very happy about that part of it, very happy about that part of it" - Lawrence Halprin.

I think he's still alive but I'm not sure if he's working.

25. I didn't know that
How painful can a little flame be among friends?

I think his name should not be on there. I don't think Clinton's name should be on the FDR memorial either.

20. Historic Sites and Memorials are always a Tale of Two Eras -Loewen
A good book is James W. Loewen's Lies Across America.
It is a book about memorials and historic sites and one of the essays at the start of the book delves into this.

to paraphrase a few of his thoughts:
The images and words on markers and memorials reflect the attitudes, and ideas of the time when they were erected often many years after the event. To understand a marker or memorial we need to analyze not only the image upon it, or what it says, but also the time in which it was unveiled. Historic sites can be inaccurate or misleading due to the ideological demands of the time and the purpose of their erection or preservation. He says one way to ferret out bias is to see what historians writing in other eras have to say about the event.

The book gives some very specific example of markers and monuments all across America. Some are sad, others funny, others just glaringly false or racist.

Loewen's book is VERY good. I got it from our library and just happen to be reading it now. Weird, huh? Synchronicity ? Anyone who likes visiting historic sites, markers, and memorials will be interested in the questions he has for you to ask the guides at these locations.
His observations and suggestions could make history a lot more fun for us all.
