Is the brand new 2004 Yugo ready? Balloons? Dancing yaks?

1. I am always interested in knowing what proportion of these are
active members. Anyway to find out?
But this number is something to celebrate.

2. Big fiction fan, are you?
My dear Richardo, do you really believe that DU has 45,000 members?

Let us stop and think a moment.....

How many Freepers tombstoned? How many sock-puppets discarded (primary season IS over, afterall)? How many inactives? How many good posters axed?

Yes indeedy, it's damn impressive to say "I've got a forum with 45,000 registered users." Is it honest? Um, no.

3. No matter the true numbers
DU has an impressive record and I imagine it will still be going after other places are long gone for lack of an enemy.

4. Hey I'm just a "watch the odometer" kind of guy....
A good road trip for Richardo:
"ooooo look! We're clicking over to 100,000 miles!"

I myself have two ID's at DU: The other is CogitoErgoDem.

So no, I know better than to think there are 45K members here. It's just the odometer.

5. It is still an impressive number and deserves celebration!!!
As an activist network it is a GREAT figure even if there are duplicates or tombstoners in it.

We SHOULD celebrate the SYMBOLS of support: marking the support for Democracy : it is a beautiful thing.

YAHOO!!! It is great day!

And Bush WILL go down!

6. I'm not sure what the problem is here.
All other such BBSs refer to the same gross figure, with few if any implication that all are active and committed members. There should be no need to state the obvious; that most are passive listeners, etc.

On rare occasions, I check sites like Free Republic. Occasionally I see a thoughtful and well reasoned posting there. But for the most part (almost all), it's a very narrow range of intolerant screaming opinions. Orwell's Hate Week comes to mind.

I don't see that here on DU. This is an INCREDIBLE source of information and insight, and from a pretty wide range of viewpoints.
