Poll question: What is the Best US Newspaper in your opinion of these?
Edited on Sun May-30-04 09:32 AM by Bombtrack
and if you could sort of grade on a scale for the smaller one's. What people do the best journalism with what they have, and are the fairest and most dependable. The most unhacky/original editorial page.

My apoligies to the Arizona republic, Atlanta JC, Detroit Free Press, and other fairly widely distributed dailies that I couldn't give as choices. The Miami Herald as around the same or even maybe a little less distribution as a couple of them, but I included it because I read it alot during the school year and it's my poll.

I also didn't include the WS Journal, the NY Post&Daily News, and the Chicago Trib because I know they are disliked newspapers, justifyably on this site.

1. I couldn't choose
I think the Washington Post has done a pretty good job with their reporting, but their editorial pages are a disaster.

3. They're all so bad. I'll admit that you can't be an informed person ....
...without reading the NYT, but you really can't trust any of them, and the only soource of news doing any kind of investigative journalism these days is the New Yorker and even then, it's only coming from geriatric Sy Hersh.

Some of the best journalism today is coming from FAIR and Media Matters which, due to funding constraints, limit their activities merely to blowing all the shit published by the major media out of the water. They don't break stories. They just break down stories. And I guess it's really sad that that's the most intelligent news reporting today.

4. Los Angeles Times was my choice

They are not perfect but they have Robert Sheer!
He is my man. He nailed this Bushco early on and presented it with honesty and dignity. He, IMO, is a journalist.

5. Difficult to answer
I haven't read enough of any of them. New York's newspaper Newsday gets my vote. They dare to present both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian issue, are constantly accused in letters to the editor of having a liberal bias, present more straight news rather than slant and have the best contributers to their opinion pages (Marie Cocco, Paul Vitiello, Jimmy Breslin, Bob Keeler, etc.) Their editorial page is usually balanced and reasonable, even though I don't always agree with it.

6. You owe the AZRepublic no apology.
It sucks.

Also, you mention not including the Chicago Trib in your poll, but it is one of the choices. Did you mean to say the Chicago Sun-Times?

The Trib is actually a good paper. It's their editorial board that is RW. The only good thing about the Sun-Times is the Sports section (at least according to my dad who cites it as the only reason for continuing his subscription).

9. I don't know much about either of the papers.
I assumed one was tabloid RW and one was mostly respectable, IE the Boston and NY papers.

I read the trib was the tabloid one so I just assumed the other was respectable

7. Even Though The WaPo Editorial Pages Rivals That of
the WSJ for their illiberalism and disconnect even to their own reporting, pound-for-pound they have had the most scoops and damaging information against the Bushies during the occupation. I know that's not saying much, but I get my information whenever I can.

8. USAToday
USAToday has actually done a LOT of excellent reporting on 9/11.

Just saying.
