PORTSMOUTH - To the row of Saturday regulars lining the Brewery Lane Tavern bar, the afternoon promises suds and pub food. But to Mike Filiault, Saturday’s business at the "BLT" shows promise of helping local soldiers serving overseas.
As commander of the York Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6977, Filiault said he knows the BLT owners are committed to supporting local troops, not just with patriotic talk, but with a cut of their profits. Ten percent of the total take pulled at the BLT on Saturday will be turned over to Filiault’s post to assemble care packages and ship them to members of the Air National Guard’s 157th Air Refueling Wing, headquartered at Pease International Tradeport.
In honor of Memorial Day, veterans with a military ID received 20 percent off their purchases from the BLT menu, which featured hot dogs, apple pie and "freedom fries" specials, a deal scheduled to be repeated July 4.
To date, Post 6977 has mailed more than 300 care packages, most containing toiletries and postage, and with a combined value of more than $17,000.
"There’s a lot of negative media," said Darren Guay, BLT co-owner. "It’s time to pull some positive."
