Killer Rash Breaks Out
Edited on Sun May-30-04 07:51 PM by PaDUer
May 30, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE

A vicious skin infection resistant to all but the most powerful antibiotics has jumped out of New York City hospitals and onto the streets.

The "superbug," as health officials refer to it, can cause anything from reddening of the skin, to abscesses, tissue loss, amputation or even death in severe cases, doctors said.

For decades confined to hospitals, where it preyed on patients and built up immunity to antibiotics, the bug - known officially as Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus or MRSA - has also grown in strength.

THE SUPERBUG: One new case a week of MRSA is being detected in some New York City clinics.

-snip-
There are now three antibiotics left that can attack MRSA: vancomysin, daptomycin and linezolid. But those antibiotics are beginning to lose their potency against the bug.

4. They knew this day would come
It sucks, and makes me want to avoid hospitals even more than I already do. Until they come up with viable alternatives to traditional antibiotics, like bacteriophages, we're fucked.

5. So....
The rash "broke out" of the hospital? Was it armed? Did it tie towels together to make a rope and escape through a window? Did it take hostages? Are there search dogs looking for it?:)

21. Think this is friggin funny....?
You have some issues. This is not a matter to be taken lightly.
What's more, IMHO this is a MUCH more serious threat than some
pantsy "Al-Qaeda" bs booga-booga.

Too bad antibiotic producers never warned us about their products...
and now we're paying the ultimate price...or will be...

7. This is what my mom died of on April 17th
needless to say I don't find it the laughing matter some other posters apparently do. Admittedly had she been healthier she may have made it but we can never know.

8. Candy posted this elsewhere... You aren't alone,
My cousin died in a hospital in Florida several years ago

when he was hospitalized for an injury and contacted a staph infection and died from it. A hospital where I live has been known for staph infections for several years and a nurse who works there told me it has not gotten better,so staph may on the rise more than we know. Many deaths in hospitals probably are staph related but don't get reported as such.

It has been a long month and a half. Thursday was her birthday which was sort of rough. She apparently caught it from the home she was in.

Unrelated but check your inbox.

 I don't find this the least bit funny. It's frightening as hell that we have a disease that may not be treatable. Geez. Not funny at all.
