Anyone else like Laura Bush?
Edited on Sun May-30-04 10:22 PM by quinnox
There is a lot of invective directed at her and that is perfectly fine because of the nature of DU, but I for one actually have positive feelings towards her. She seems to be a nice woman and classy and doesn't seem too interested in the politics game like other first ladies such as Barbara Bush or Hillary Clinton.

I think she is too good for George Bush.

5. Laura Bush reminds me of many of the white women of the South
during segregation. They were polite and prim and sexually repressed and they knew how to keep black people in their place with politeness.

All in all, pretty horrible.

17. hey - Babs is a well documented pit viper
she put the itch in bitch. People just aren't aware of all the people she has insulted, treated badly and abused (generally verbally). As for laura - she is cut from the same cloth as any woman who allows her husband to abuse his kids - passive aggressive denial won't cut her any special privileges in case these crooks are ever prosecuted.

"But why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many, what day it's going to happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Oh, I mean, it's, not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

The woman has no soul.

The best description of her I ever heard: "Gila monster in pearls."

42. She is no teacher by any standard!
She taught for one school year way back before she got married. As soon as she got engaged to a guy with bucks, she quit working. She has had a very lazy life - and don't forget that she could have easily left him - great grounds during those decades of his alcohol and drug abuse - many women married to drunks/addicts got divorced and went back to work to raise their children free of the crappy homelife of sharing a home with a drunk/addict. You can see there is no normal parent/child relationship with their daughters. There are weekly pictures of the first couple off for a weekend with their dogs. I have never seen the kind of closeness and warmth in any family picture of the four of them that you regularly saw between the Clintons and their daughter, or LBJ and his family.
Laura Bush has spent her life as an enabler for the private and public destruction wrought by her husband on his children, not to mention the children of this nation.

And don't get me started on the No Child Left Behind act. In our state, many of the school districts are laying off teachers while struggling to comply with the unfunded federal mandates of this
bogus act. That alone shows you how much Laura Bush cares about education and teaching!

Laura Bush: 1963, ran stop sign & killed boyfriend
Source: AP

By JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - At 17, Laura Bush ran a stop sign and crashed into another car, killing her boyfriend who was driving it, according to an accident report released to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Mrs. Bush is the wife of Republican presidential nominee-to-be George W. Bush (news - web sites), the Texas governor.

-snip-

According to the two-page accident report released Wednesday by the city of Midland, Laura Welch was driving her Chevrolet sedan on a clear night shortly after 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, 1963, when she drove into an intersection and struck a Corvair sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas.

Although previous news accounts have reported Douglas was thrown from the car and broke his neck, those details were not in the report.

The speed of Laura Bush's car was illegible on the report. The speed limit for the road was 55.

-snip-
The police report indicates no charges were filed. That section of the report was left blank.

31. Exactly on target!
I will not give Laura any respect until the Repugs give Hillary respect. Call me stubborn but that's how they've made me feel after all they've said about Hillary over the years. I can't help but take it personally.

I still can't relate to her very well because she appears to me to be too submissive up front but looks like she could be a real polite but snobby b*tch if she wanted to be.

My neighbor's daughter went to D.C. awhile back and was able to see Laura up close and took a personal photo of her. My neighbor was showing to everyone she could and everyone was ooing and awwing about how "attractive" she was. I don't think she's that attractive if you ask me. I don't like those catty slitty eyes and I hate her hair. Needless to say I ignored the whole thing and had no comment.

She also reminds me of those females who pick the most popular guy as a boyfriend no matter how rotten he is and then they stick with him no matter how badly he treats her. I think people like that are absolutely dumb and never truly happy in life. That's how I picture her....riding on her hubby's coat tails.

16. Don't you mean Senator Clinton?
Please don't compare Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. They're comparable only in the sense they have been married to the guy in the White House.

Laura is probably more in the Pat Nixon role. Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan were similar (Poisonous Harpies, although Nancy is now coming around). Hillary really is more in the Eleanor Roosevelt/Roslynn Carter mold, but with more personal ambition.

What kind of person would be married to the president and NOT be interested in politics?

And Laura Bush, in case you missed it, has been campaigning a lot for her husband lately. She is featured in a series of internet ads promoting the "No Child Left Behind" education fiasco, which is nothing but political.

SAD.....

(in a truly pathetic kind of way....)

But, I don't think she earns a total free ride, though I don't join in on the "fashion" critiques and other criticisms that are fairly inconsequential. She IS active on the campaign trail and belies her own beliefs (pro-choice, for example) in order to help her husband and his party turn us back to the era of coat hanger solutions. She has definitely been the recipient of very special treatment (along with the twins), yet has no problem when her husband invokes punitive measures that are devastating to children of poorer families (e.g., harsh drug sentences, loss of financial aid for any prior drug conviction, decimation of early childhood education, libraries, etc., etc).

It is hard to argue that she is not at least partially culpable for the actions of her husband and his party, since she gives political coverage in so many areas. Whether or not she is fair game is arguable, I suppose. But I don't think she should be totally absent of ANY criticism.
