2. i got even more furious.
more victims of the idiot in the wh. what a waste. even though i can't comprehend ever believing that somehow this war could in any way be misconstrued as being to "defend" our country, i couldn't help but feel for the families of those simple-minded ones who do. i'm torn - i feel sympathy but at the same time know we couldn't have this war if they didn't sign up to fight in the first place....

15. Remember when "mercenary" was a term of utter contempt?
When America prided itself on its "citizen soldiers?" Now we have a "professional" military made up entirely of "volunteers." The same kind of volunteers as the Hessians we were taught to detest in elementary school. Of course one grieves for the hideous waste of young lives. I just hope the grief can be turned into righteous fury against the chimp and his loathsome henchmen when the time comes...

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER by Buffy Sainte-Marie
He’s 5 foot 2 and he’s 6 feet 4
He fights with missiles and with spears
He’s all of 31 and he’s only 17.
He’s been a soldier for a thousand years

He’s a catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jane
A Bhuddist, and a Baptist and Jew.
And he knows he shouldn’t kill
And he knows he always will kill
You’ll for me my friend and me for you

And He’s fighting for Canada.
He’s fighting for France.
He’s fighting for the USA.
And he’s fighting for the Russians.
And he’s fighting for Japan
And he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way.

And He’s fighting for democracy,
He’s fighting for the reds
He says it’s for the peace of all.
He’s the one, who must decide,
who’s to live and who’s to die.
And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,
how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He’s the one who gives his body
as a weapon of the war.
And without him all this killing can’t go on

He’s the universal soldier
And he really is the blame
His orders comes from
far away no more.

They come from him.
And you and me.
And brothers can’t you see,
This is not the way we put an end to war?

17. Tommy
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o'beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We don't serve you red-coats 'ere."
The girls be'ind the bar they larfed an' giggled fit to die,
And outs in the street I finds meself, an' to meself sez I:

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play!
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mr. Atkins," when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me!;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they shove us in the stalls!

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.

Yes, makin' mock o' the uniforms that guards you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, (an' they're starvation cheap!);
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is ten times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes!" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes!" when the drums begin to roll.

Now we aren't no "thin red 'eroes", but we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our be'avior isn't all your fancy paints:
Well single men in barricks don't grow up into plaster saints!;

While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind,"
But it's "Please to walk in front," when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front," when there's trouble in the wind.

You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires an' all:
But you could keep your extry rations if you'd treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slop, but prove it to our face
The His Countries Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country," when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
But Tommy ain't no bloody fool - you bet that Tommy sees!

5. And this morning on Today, KC was interviewing
two soldiers who were wounded in DimSon's war. They both had a leg blown off by an IED while travelling in their minimally protected vehicles. Made me furious that Rumsferatu, et al, don't give a damn about protecting troops with better equipment.

8. Better equipment cost $. That the pukes must stuff in their pockets.
Our troops will receive new and improved GOP propaganda. And that is it. Lead by neglect. That should be the GOP motto.

6. Oh, the irony
Edited on Mon May-31-04 08:32 AM by HFishbine
I had the great misfortune of sitting in a bar where 60 Minutes was on, but with the sound turned down. Some stupid blathering idiot was going on and on about nigger this and nigger that and how the niggers get all the breaks; this as African-American face after face scrolled across the TV screen. I didn't even see the irony until now. How I wish I had asked him to look at the TV for a minute.

9. So did you cut in and tell him to look at the TV?
I would have confronted the guy. His language was inexcusable and if you rudely interrupted him he might think twice next time he was tempted to spout off like that.

12. No, that's my regret
At the time, I didn't realize how poignant such a request of him would have been. Instead, I stood up and told my girlfriend, in words loud enough for him to hear, "I'll meet you in the car, I can't listen to language like this anymore." I could have done more, but I was tired and drained from what I had just been watching.

A small consolation may be that the bartender was keenly aware of why two of her eight customers where leaving. Maybe it will now occur to her that if she allows hate-mongering in the bar, she will lose business. I know the bar owner and will have a word with him about it too.

Any place of business that would allow that kind of hate to go on would never see another dime of my money.

18. Good point
Edited on Mon May-31-04 09:25 AM by HFishbine
If I come to the opinion that it is, in fact, "allowed" I will indeed find another spot.

The thing is, I've been going there for a decade and they guy making the comments is a newcommer. The bartender is new too, and may not have known just how to deal with the situation. I will have a conversation with the owner and, knowing him, I suspect he'll put a stop to it. If he doesn't, I'm gone. I'm almost certain the new guy will be confronted; one-third of the bar's regulars are black and if the racist shit isn't nipped in the bud, it will be the death of that bar.

26. Made me think of the story about the ex-Navy "patriot"
getting all over a couple middle-aged women war protestors.
It ran through my mind that some instruction with a baseball
bat might teach him better manners.
