10. a drunk Bush trying to impress Laura's crush, Chalabi
The banality of evil and incompetence. Believe that Putin is involved - when Bush "looked into his eyes" Putin went to every major power with the news that we had a complete moron for President, and the rest of the world started giving him as much rope as Bush begged for.

I fear the damage will be historic.

12. Agreed ...

As I note in another post. The Iranians may simply have been trying to determine if their codes were busted by implicating Chalabi in their communications.

22. The Iranian thought Chalabi....
was an idiot and didn't believe him at first--something the neocon Keystone Cops at DOD didn't recognize about him. I wonder what they think of him---privately----now? Interesting, no?

9. Something doesn't make sense
"The New York Times, citing U.S. intelligence officials, said the U.S. learned of Chalabi's activities when an Iranian intelligence agent in Baghdad sent a coded message to Tehran reporting that Chalabi had told him the U.S. had broken the codes.

According to the message, which was read by the U.S., Chalabi claimed to have gotten the information from an unnamed American who was drunk, the Times said."

Why would the Iranian agent send a coded message like this when he KNEW the code was broken????

A REAL spook would know that a compromised code could be used to mis-direct American intelligence. Besides, there are ways of communicating in secret without scrambling words. I'm sure that there would be SOME seemingly meanlingless phrase that meant their communications channel would have been compromised.

This sounds like a load of bull to me.

At the very LEAST. The Iranians could have been baiting Americans into thinking that Chalabi was their spook. If the NSA hadn't broken their codes, nothing would come of it. If they had, Chalabi would have action taken against him.

I still think Chalabi is a putz. But the biggest joke here may be on George Tenent.

23. What's even more incredulous is the "didn't connect the dots" claim...
Regarding these two historical events:

9/11? "Didn't connect the dots..."
WMDs? Bad intelligence ("Didn't connect the dots...")

But:
On Tuesday, CBS News reported that Chalabi recently told an Iranian intelligence official that the U.S. had cracked the codes, allowing the U.S. to read communications on everything from Iran's sponsorship of terrorists to its covert operations inside Iraq.

Sounds like good ol' crack, stellar intelligence operations to me, along the lines of what the British did during WWII with Germany's Enigma Machine...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/war/wwtwo/enigma_01.shtml

Makes the Bush argument that certain messages sent by Al Qaeda that alluded to the 9/11 attacks and intercepted by the US, were delayed in translating and therefore worthless, even more difficult to believe:

Messages from members of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network included the phrases "Tomorrow is zero hour" and "The match begins tomorrow," which government sources have said were picked up on Sept. 10 by National Security Agency eavesdropping on global communications.

Those two messages were not translated from Arabic until Sept. 12. Critics have called them examples of missed clues.

21. This is all very stupid. Can people who are supposed to lead be this
stupid? Including Chalabi? I don't think so, so I'm not believing it for the time being.

What we have been asked to believe in the last 3 1/2 years is so amazingly transparent and bizarre - it is out of this world in incredulity.

From aresenic is good for you to didn't steal the election to this and Halliburton and California and no one spilled the beans on Plame.
