U.N. Official: Iraqis Ready to Turn on U.S. Troops
Reuters
Wednesday, August 13, 2003

PARIS (Reuters) - Prominent Iraqis who despised Saddam Hussein will take up arms against U.S. forces if life under occupation does not quickly improve, a senior U.N. official said in outspoken criticism of Washington's postwar policy in Iraq.

Ghassan Salameh, adviser to the special U.N. representative to Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello, told the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur in an interview published Wednesday that the United States had bungled its victory since toppling Saddam.
"Many influential Iraqis who initially felt liberated from a despised regime have assured me that they will take up arms if the coalition troops do not arrive at a result. Time is short," the magazine quoted Salameh as saying.

skip..............

Salameh warned that ordinary people, frustrated by the lack of basic services four months after the fall of Saddam, could rally behind ideological opponents of the occupying forces.

"In reality, the population is very surprised. They don't understand how such a level of efficiency during the war could be followed by such a lack of efficiency in 'peace,"' he said.

more..................

think it is regard to ALL the Iraqi civilians,

not just the Bathists, Shiites, extremists, ex-Saddam thugs,
ex-Saddam military, ex-Saddam secret service torturers,
layed off disgruntled millions of Saddam govt employees,
families of those who had sons/daughters/mothers/fathers
killed by US forces, those family members who were 'napalmed'
by the invading armies that have turned against the US forces
occupying their homeland.

No, just all the rest <sarcasm> left of the Iraqis who havent
yet turned.

2. there was talk of a "window"
Some kind of independent commission gave us something like a 3-month window during which we must improve the situation there or else it would totally spin out of control.

That actually was quite a while ago, and nothing seems really to have changed since then.

And I don't think having Bremer tell the Iraqis to turn their frowns upside down was the recommended solution.

5. I dont think it's a question
of improving their lives; It's about all those new freedoms the Iraqis are now enjoying.

9. they obviously do not appreciate
or know just how to enjoy them. They are the problem, not us. Remember, they hate us for our freedoms......

7. This is what you should expect
...when you have assholes from marketing firms running the show rather than proven statesmen (stateswomen). That's right, let us send in some construction workers to do brain surgery.

Speaking of construction workers, where does Sean Hannity get off bagging on Hollywood celebs for offering their political opinions? Is it because they are not political wonks by profession? I mean, Hannity was a construction worker before he became that squinty-eyed, loud-mouth on the radio. And Rush Limbaugh? He was a heavy metal disc jockey before his foray into bullshittery.

8. just get out
We freed them from Saddam, there is no WMD, just go to the UN and beg for them to take it completely over, then get the majority of our troops out and let the UN handle it.

The time for two countries occupying Iraq should now be over. Move on.
