By Jake Weyer
o Anne Wetherell-Moriarty has a husband and two children. She also has a job as an information technology professional in the human ecology department — at least until the end of August.
Moriarty, who has worked at the University for almost 15 years, is one of almost 500 University employees who have received layoff or nonrenewal notices since Jan. 1, according to a report from the University’s human resources department.

“It’s stressful to see people you’re working with leave and wonder what your future is,” Moriarty said.

1. 70's people, question
I don't remember these kinds of lay-offs in the late 70's - early 80's. I remember plants shutting down and the whole merger, shut down, deal.

I don't remember universities and banks and everyday businesses laying people off like this. Is my memory faulty or is something very different, beyond IT job exports, going on?

2. I really think the internet changes things
It allows companies to move their office staffs and phone banks overseas without losing productivity.

I think it's a real tidal shift in our economy that is going on. This is something very new. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years you will call your local Pizza Hut and the call will be picked up in Manila, and the phone person will by computer relate the order to the local place where the pizza is made and delivered.

4. It's Not The Layoffs, It's The Jobs Growth
Every recession period, there was always a ray of hope somewhere. In the early 90s recession, there were pockets of the country that one could move to and start over again.

Not this time. This time there's no safe haven, and there's no JOB CREATION in any field. That is new.

5. bingo
where are the good jobs, the ones that will allow someone to have a stable career and raise a family?

what can you tell someone who's just entering college, and wants to know what field to go into?

or what about the kids who aren't even going to college? where will they be able to find work???

6. Things are so
bad, I question if the Bush Crime Family has an inkling
of just how bad they really are.

With me sick, hubby no job, house up for sale and the
vultures telling me we should be thrilled to sell it
for 30-40K less than appraisal price.....

Things are so bad here, my Republican neighbor and I can
talk ONLY about the weather or her grandkids. that's it.

According to her, Clinton laid the groundwork for
everything that has happened and that Reps can do no
wrong. Ever.

And good ol' Reps that they are, they've been spending
the big bucks since before Xmas and continue. I wonder
about the bonus.... untaxable cash?? Meanwhile all the
people his company laid off, none of them have been
rehired because that would eat into all of those
bonus coming out every 3-4 months.

I could go on and on about them, the Rep company, oil
ties etc. but I won't. Their values are disgusting.
