It's so true - radical Republicans don't get it
I am a 17 year veteran in the education business, 13 as a teacher, and now 4 as a school counselor. I work in the North Texas area, and I am considered the "radical leftest" on my campus. I really like my co-workers, but I consider only one other person who shares the same political philosophy that I do, and she moved here from Maryland.

It seems that everytime I state the obvious about the Republican agenda against public education, I hear groans and some shouting. But this one case in point is really telling. My assistant principal (who has objected to some of my anti-Bush displays in my office) is very hard-core Republican. I showed her a letter that I received from my "evil teachers' union." It showed the votes in the Texas house to restore some of the money we receive as stipends back to us in public education. You see, the Republican controlled legislature cut $500 from teacher stipends, and the whole $1,000 from administrator stipends. I showed her the vote, which was almost entirely along party lines. The Democrats voted to restore some of our stipend, but the Republicans voted against it.

I thought that just maybe this would be the moment I would convert someone. Instead, my assistant principal threw the paper on the table and said, "This doesn't prove anything." I asked her how in the world could she say that! She simply turned away.

Imagine, a vote along party lines with the Republicans voting to cut your pay and the Democrats wanting to restore it and simply saying "this doesn't prove anything." What the hell! I guess that money isn't that important to her, or that she is in complete denial.

and drug addicts who act the same way, when confronted by the truth.

Sounds like The Little Missy is Getting Hissy, as the truth dawns on her ass.

you might as well have said "I know europeans and italians"

alcohol is a drug, an addictive, dangerous drug.

28. Addictions aren't the sole domain of drugs
There are loads of psychological addictions out there to all kinds of things. Having addicts to both drugs and other psychological phenomena, I can tell you that it does quite closely sound like the reaction you get when you confront an addict on their words, beliefs or behaviors.

Addiction is all about denial of something that causes pain. The claim in this case probably isn't that far off.

7. Damn right, it is so bizarre
How in the world can an educator support a political party that wants to cut our throats? In my mind, a Republican teacher is almost on the same level as a minority supporting the Klan.

Yes, a little extreme, but you should hear the shit I hear at work. Unbelievable.

33. Repukes are about winning for their side.
All their supposed values are really just talking points aimed at crushing liberals and dems. In most cases (except at the RNC level) they are not even aware of this. i.e. they believe the RNC bullshit - because they believe whatever will help them win.

They will drop their values at a moments notice if they get in the way - like states rights or rules about redistricting - or a million others.

BTW I am posting this because I lived in N Texas from 51 through 58 (3rd through 10th grade). In my case my small town (Richardson pop. 5200 in those days) was like every other small Texas town in that the world revolved around the high school football team. All other school functions were secondary.

Actually I had some very good teachers. But they were up against an administration that was there to instill the idea that winning and being better (bigger, louder, tougher) and bragging about it is the only value worth learning. Fortunately they failed in my case as I ran away from home at age 15 and finished high school with my grandparents in California.

But I suspect things haven't changed that much and that's why you are in a minority there and why so many pukes come from Texas.

12. good point!
I work with some flaming republicans, and have decided to stay mum about my thoughts. Its just not worth it.

I make my points by contributing $ to democratic causes and writing letters to the media.

My personal opinion is that the media is at least 50% to blame for these knuckleheads' stalwart beliefs.

9. It doesn't matter what they say or how they react...
you put a fact in her head that she can't refute and that is what matters. Although I would certainly agree with Cherrypenny not to risk your job over this, you obviously are the best judge, if you feel confident that you can safely do this activism at work then god bless you for trying. Just because she behaved in a way that showed she was trying to save face doesn't mean she stopped thinking about it, or will be able to forget it. It would definitely help in Congress if more people like this started raising hell with their right wing reps and senators, because it might swing the republicans more toward the middle again so we can have a real congress and not just strict partisan politics.

15. conservatism is hatred and fear of thinking
among other things.

Then there's the fear of nuance, the fear of complexity, the fear of uncertainty, the fear of EVER being seen as wrong, fear of the different, fear of the new, the hatred of joy and the hatred of criticism.

Oh, and let's not forget the general, broad-spectum, non-specific suckitude.

They hate life. Anything base and vulgar like breastfeeding is inherently grotesque to them. Dancing is disgusting, unless it's "rising above" the savageness with some kind of very specific rules and format.

Sex for fun is bad because fun is bad. Sexual exploits, when admitted, are rooted in conquest and the triumph over their partners. Triumph is expressed by money, and getting others to do your bidding without having to reciprocate. Making others submit to degradation for their pleasure is the sauce of their "love".

There is no "win-win" in naziland; it's not a succulent victory unless you can hear the agonizing downfall of your foe. It's not enough to have a lot, you have to have MORE than others, even if you have to import a loser to put on display just to feel better.

How do they enjoy themselves? Ever listen to conservatives telling jokes? The jokes are often rooted in the ridicule of the unfortunate.

Some people will never join the fun. They'll keep alive the lie that they're actually "making it" in this society and that others envy them for their position and very being. They'll let themselves be marginalized to nothing as long as the illusion holds.

Ahhhh, that felt better. Time to put the kids to bed...

18. My Theory
There was a time when conservitives did care about more than themselves. Look at Teddy Rosevelt's desire to protect the enviornment or the director of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington who believed in the little guy. Saddly, this new conservitism is what's corrupting the everything.
I believe some of it is their own insecurity about the things around them and knowing they're being scred over, but yet they need something to feel superior to make this go away. That's where everyone else comes in to be bullied, ridculed, looked down upon, or screwed over for their own profit.
The fear of life is another good point you had. Some of them may have been raised in fearful religious/social establishments where certain things such as sex, love, or enjoying life was wrong because God had certain rules or suffering was good so you could go into Heaven. So if you cannot enjoy the simpler things in life, what do you turn to? Money and power. To hell with sharing and being nice to others? They're not like you and will tear you away from what is "right" because God likes you more than them.
We all have a materialistic streak, I love to shop, I try to add something to my little collections at least once a week, and drool/obsess whenever the latest Harvest Moon game comes out, but some just take it to the point that they believe that's money, power, cultural/financial/sexual/racial superiority are only thing that will make them happy and are ok to be happy about.
You know, as I type this, I really am starting to feel sorry for these kinds of people.
Love,
Yaoi Huntress Earth

24. I cannot feel sorry for monsters, Huntress
And that is what they have been programmed to become at a word from their Bushevik Masters. Because we have not reached this ultimate phase, their monstrousness is limited to voting twice or Freeping polls but when asked to they will do ANYTHINg without question nor remorse.

(no I am not referring to all Republicans or Conservatives but to the drooling followers of the VRWC which are expanding all the time)

And they are as responsible for their condition as the 1933 Germans.

Be ready for the other shoe to drop some decades from now or perhaps much sooner.

(it all depends when the Busheviks decide to activate their automatons for Soviet or nazi-style behavior...in truth it probably won't be Nazi-like because peopel would recognize it...bad PR you know)

16. One step at at time
"This doesn't prove anything."

She's right - not by itself. But it is one more bit of data that she has that doesn't fit well with her party loyalties and self-concept. She acknowledged this by symbolically discarding the message. The rather vehement rejection suggests a certain sense of vulnerability on that subject. It seems you and reality are having an impact. Be patient and understand her quandry.

(just guessing, of course.)

19. Many of the Abused Love their Abusers
This is the Republican mentality: "Thank you sir may I have another"... It's the result of a traumatic and abusive upbringing that results in cognitive dissonance. Your parent beats you, but your SUPPOSED to love them according to society. No one wants to be "abnormal" and hate their parents, so the child convinces him/herself that the parent is doing a good thing by beating them. It leads to this Repub mindset of loving your abuser and blaming yourself for their abuse...

20. Goebbels v2.0 has rendered them insensate to logic, proof, etc.
That is what it is desiogned to do, to create a class of people invulnerable to all argument, even if it is as demonstrably factual as the vote or even 1 + 1 = 2 (didn't you know Faux News said it equalled Three, you Commie?)

Goebbels v2.0 like v1.0 is designed to create a sub-group of people that may be activated with a chance word from tyheir Masters. Of course she reacted that way. Of course she did.

The Busheviks didn't spend BILLIONS because they wanted followers who could think and reason.

25. From "The Clinton Wars"
I just read this part last night-

Syd Blumenthal recounts a conversation he had with Mary Bono right after the impeachment trial. She was trying to be friendly when she lamented that the impeachment had been hard on everyone. She then said that Lindsey Graham had "fun" making fun of Mr. Blumenthal's name. I don't know the specific comments she was referring to, but from the context it sounded like Rep. Graham had made some childish and/or derrogatory comments, perhaps calling him Syd Vicious or something like that.

Blumenthal found it equally disturbing that the ridiculing comments had entered into the political discourse and that she had referred to it in such a lighthearted manner.

As far as it applies to Goebbles and propaganda, I think it's a way to dehumanize and demonize "the enemy." It's truly sickening.

26. Denial

Some people are just amazingly good at it. When my lesbian friend came out to her ultraconservative mother, she did it right before a trip to the mall. Her mother snapped " Just put that foolish notion right out your head and get your coat on.: In all the years between then and her death ( about 30 ) her sexuality was never mentioned.

In another example, a friend caught another ( fundy )friend's son torturing lizards. When she confronted the mom, the woman said, " My son doesn't do things like that!" and stalked off.

Hey, you cannot reason with these people. IMO, it's useless to even try. I know. I have them on both sides of my family. Really "religious". Go to church every Sunday. Have a solid middle class life style. BUT, they have no intention of ever helping anybody who might need a little help. To them, there is something wrong with you if you can't make ends meet or have a health problem of some sort. It just doesn't happen to Republicans.

29. What truly amazes me
is how ANY working person could be Republican. I am always astounded when hearing working folks talk about how great that party is. I cannot understand how any person making less than 100K a year would even think of supporting that party.
They have a track record showing how much of their agenda is determined by corporate influence.
It makes me laugh when I hear the words "tax cut" coming from any Republican. When they talk tax cuts they ain't thinking about us working stiffs baby! :)
Good luck in remaining calm when in her presence. After all, if she truly supports the GOP then she supported the unilateral, illegal, and immoral invasion of a country that posed no military threat to us.

Ask her "Would you say the same thing if instead the Democrats were voting to cut your pay, and the Republicans were voting to restore it?"

That question might help to determine if it's just cognitive dissonance, or simple good old fashioned Republican hypocrisy.
