Yup, for all you DU'ers who live near Ventura County, CA., this Friday The Sock Puppet will be visiting the Park Ranger Service at the corner of McCloud and Hillcrest, across the street from the Oaks Mall. The purpose of his visit? To convince Californians that he is a great champion of the environment. Got an e-mail tonight advising me of protests planned, so I'll be there with bells on!

2. Protests have dogged Garden Gnome since Day One
Having returned from the US recently, protesters have had their work cut out for them, as they are up against a wave of jingoism that, until my recent trip, I had never experienced before.

I planted a few seeds of thought, though, at coffee shop counters, art shows, chili cook-offs, and the like, that the military is royally pissed off at Garden Gnome, and here's why...... :)

8. Of course he will...
Why waste an opportunity to have us taxpayers pay for fundraising events?

Stage a small event on our tab and hold a fundraiser that evening...works everytime.

13. Details here (from Santa Barbara NION message)
15 AUGUST, FRIDAY: SANTA BARBARA CARPOOL TO PROTEST BUSH

Friday offers a rare opportunity for local participation in an appropriate progressive California un-welcome to President-select Bush (RE-DEFEAT BUSH!), who will be arriving in Thousand Oaks early Friday morning by helicopter to promote his so-called Healthy Forests Initiative, otherwise known as the Horizontal Forests Initiative.

Participants will gather in Thousand Oaks at the corner of Hillcrest and McCloud, the nearest intersection to the entrance to the National Park Services Visitor Center, and one that must be traversed by media people and Bush's audience.

MAP:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&address=McCloud+%26+Hillcrest&city=Thousand+Oaks&state=CA&zipcode=&homesubmit=Get+Map

Should authorities succeed in blocking access to the intersection, the protest will occur at The Oaks Mall directly adjacent.

This gathering is a NON-VIOLENT ACTION to protest the Bush Administration's illegal and immoral policy of offensive warfare, as well as its lies and deception regarding both foreign and domestic policies, such as its sham forest policy (see yesterday's New York Times editorial, A Misdirected Forest Strategy: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/12/opinion/12TUE5.html?ex=1061667792&ei=1&en=9c4c2c3b9b963558).

We have the legal right to peacefully assemble on the public sidewalk, as long as we do not obstruct traffic or commerce.

TIME: 15 August, Friday: 8am to 10:30 am
PLACE: Corner of Hillcrest and McCloud (map link above)
DATE: Friday August 15, 2003
PARKING: Available at the Oaks Mall (across the street)

DIRECTIONS: Highway 101 south to Lynn Road exit. North on Lynn Road. Turn east (right) on Hillcrest Drive, then to N. McCloud Avenue.

More than 750 people protested Bush's foreign and domestic policies in Tucson on Monday, and reports indicate that the Secret Service is going to greater lengths than usual to restrict information regarding the timing of his appearances.

The best information we have at the time of this writing indicates that we should be in Thousand Oaks by 8:00 am, therefore we suggest leaving Santa Barbara no later than 7:00 am.

Local transportation-sharing:

Those who would like to get together to share transportation can meet between 6:45 am and 7:00 am at City Parking Lot #11 (http://ci.santa-barbara.ca.us/departments/public_works/transportation/downtown_parking/map.htm) , at the northwest corner of Haley & Ancapa Streets, and the nearest city lot to Vera Cruz Park.

This is a large parking lot, so please gather in the small section immediately adjacent to Haley Street.
